Premier promotes regional agenda at Dubai summit

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley is attending a major international cooperation conference in Dubai aimed at advancing sustainable development across the Greater Caribbean Region.

The Premier is participating in the 10th Association of Caribbean States (ACS) International Cooperation Conference, held from February 3 to 4 on the margins of the World Governments Summit.

A government press release stated that the forum “seeks to deliver tangible and high-impact outcomes for the sustainable development of the Greater Caribbean Region”. It added that, for the first time, the conference is being convened on a global platform highlighting innovation, resilience and South–South cooperation.

In an invitation extended to the Premier, the ACS indicated that the conference would facilitate dialogue on several flagship initiatives. These include the digitisation of maritime transport and logistics, regional strategies to address sargassum, ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction, and implementation of the ACS Strategic Plan 2025–2035.

The government stated that the trip was fully sponsored by the World Governments Summit and the ACS.

“By participating in this high-level exchange, the Virgin Islands is continuing to position itself as a proactive leader in regional diplomacy and environmental stewardship,” Premier Wheatley stated.

“Our participation allows us to align our development goals with broader regional strategies. By leveraging global partnerships and South–South cooperation, we can more effectively address challenges like sargassum and maritime efficiency that no single nation can solve alone,” he added.

ACS Secretary-General H E Noemí Espinoza Madrid said Premier Wheatley’s presence was invaluable in advancing the region’s shared development agenda.

The Premier is accompanied by Special Envoy Benito Wheatley.

While the Premier is overseas, Deputy Premier Julian Fraser has been authorised to carry out the duties of Premier and Minister of Finance from February 1 to 10.

The ACS brings together countries of the Greater Caribbean to promote consultation, cooperation and coordinated action on regional priorities.
