Premier says government will not pay Willock’s fees

Willock

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has confirmed that government will not foot the legal bill incurred by former Speaker of the House, Julian Willock, in his failed injunction against three Commission of Inquiry lawyers.

Responding to a question posed about the matter at a press conference today, the Premier gave a resounding one-sentence confirmation stating: “No, we (the government) won’t pay it”.

In August of 2021, Willock filed an injunction in the High Court against COI lawyers Bilal Rawat, Andrew King and Rhea Harrikissoon, claiming they were not properly admitted to practice law in the territory.

The following month, the High Court rejected the injunction and ordered Willock to pay the legal fees of everyone involved in the process.

Former Premier, Andrew Fahie, moved to appoint a Special Parliamentary Committee to determine what permission Willock received when he filed the injunction and whether this legal action was warranted.

However, the Special Parliamentary Committee determined that no expressed permission was given to Willock to file the injunction. However, the committee was satisfied that Willock acted in his official capacity as Speaker and in good faith on the “assumption” that permission would have been given.

It then decided to uphold the High Court’s decision.

The total legal fees amounted to approximately $98,000.

      Stop with the racism and generalisations of white vs black. Not helpful or productive. Whites can be just as greedy and deceitful – so, let’s elevate the conversation.

      @Wilock – pay your debts. 🙂

    “We the Government”, meaning he and his crew. So for all we know, it might really fall on us tax payers once they spend more money fighting him trying to fight them into paying for it. All of this done on “behalf of the people”, mind you.

    is the next step. He simply failed to pay the court ordered legal fees for over 9 months so jail time is coming unless he pays forthwith. Why do some persons get these free passes while normal BVI litigants do not.

    For the record

    If Andrew was here, he was NOT going to pay the bill for the Governor for sure AND if he was ridiculed to do it; then he was going to pay BOTH of them, so the esteemed would not have had to do it. Lest we forget, we need to remember that CHARITY begins at HOME.

    Just because the Government isn’t paying them doesn’t mean Willock is. Seeing as Andrew and the VIP cronies put him up to it they will be paid for by them. The VIP Congress has very rich people backing it.

    The guy cannot come to grips that he was used because he likes to be in things. You were used sir, that’s all it was! They didn’t stop you because they realized you were about to hang yourself so they let you go ahead. If you had any common sense you would’ve told the Government put their instructions in writing or let the AG do their job. Nowhere in the world the Speaker of the House gets directly involved with matters like this. A COI is a legal matter and it should have been dealt with by Lawyers and/or AG Chambers, not the Speaker.
