Premier says he’s not focused on early polls, political strategy
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has said his administration is not preoccupied with early elections or political manoeuvring, stressing instead that his priority remains delivering on commitments made to the people of the Virgin Islands.
Speaking on the Talking Points radio programme recently, the Premier addressed speculation about political timing and strategy, making clear that his focus is on completing key elements of the government’s agenda before returning to the electorate.
“I have every intention of making sure that we complete our agenda before we go back to the polls,” Dr Wheatley stated. He highlighted major projects and policy goals the government aims to advance, including infrastructure development and long-term national priorities.
The Premier said the administration remains focused on tangible outcomes, such as improvements to roads, water and sewage systems, and advancing large-scale projects that have been outlined publicly. Among these, he referenced plans to extend the airport runway, develop Prospect Reef, and continue modernising infrastructure across the territory.
While acknowledging that political considerations are an unavoidable part of governance, Dr Wheatley rejected the idea that political strategy is driving decision-making. “My focus is not necessarily just on political strategy, so to speak,” he said, adding that his main concern is “delivering for the people based on what we said we would do”.
The comments came amid discussion about recent political developments, including the addition of former opposition member Stacy Mather to the government’s side and speculation about the timing of the next general election.
A unifier rather than a divider
Dr Wheatley framed these developments as being geared toward encouraging collaboration and unity, rather than partisan advantage.
“I would like to be a leader who invites persons to collaborate and to work with me in the best interest of the Virgin Islands,” he said, describing himself as a unifier rather than a divider.
The Premier also reflected on the context in which his government assumed office, noting that his leadership began amid political uncertainty and intense scrutiny following governance concerns. He said significant effort had been invested in restoring confidence locally and internationally, allowing the government to now place greater emphasis on development and service delivery.
Against that backdrop, Dr Wheatley maintained that speculation about early polls misses the point of the administration’s objectives. The government, he said, is intent on completing substantive work and ensuring progress is visible and measurable before seeking another mandate.

Unfortunately a lot of our population are not ‘dumb’ but their votes are for sale. They will march right into the voting booths, ignoring their consciences and the state of these beautiful Virgin Islands and vote for VIP. The First District is always a strong example of that for even though the seaside has been left in a terrible unfinished state and dnothing was done, they got to hobnob with the Representative while they sold vegetables, fruits, sugar cakes and dumb bread on the side of the road. How easy we are to impress. Hopefully, as we are praying, some will not be able to do it this time as four more years of this wil be truly difficult. They spend over half a billion dollars every year and we cannot see where, but now that election is coming up, we will see them like busy bees trying to impress the ignorant at heart. Let us pray and be vigilant because we see this for what it is, a last ditch effort to impress the silly voters. Let us vote wisely this election or it will be difficult to build back what we had and what we strive to achieve all those years ago when we were without electricity, running water in our pipes, proper roads. Just looking around we are slowly but surely going backwards ever and forward never.

First of all Sawonde you are not a BVI celebrity you are a f**led part time teacher at the HL Stoutt community college who f**led the people of long look to give you a chance. They saw you as a man in a tattered suit with flip flops on your feet and felt you could identify with them so they supported you while you kick them and you openly admitted that you do not know much of the people in your own constituency. In your euphoric brain you are best suited for international relations and not a mere district representative. You spend so much time trying to convince the united nation why we should go independent yet you did not ask the people of this territory their opinion concerning this issue. While at the same time you cannot address a simple matter such as fees for charter boats from st. Thomas traversing BVI waters. Now we have to worry about about backlash from America which could force us to lose usage of the US dollar or for us to get a visa to go to St. Thomas or other sanctuary that they may see fit. That is the extent of your unifying skills. One thing for certain you know how to be decisive as you victimized good BVIslanders, destroy a failing economy with excessive taxes and give social assistance to a select few some of which do not need it. You can pave as much roads as you want, pay bush cutting contracts for the youths, have Dr. Pickering solicitor votes from the elderly, and Mather’s vote from the youths at “YEP”, fly planes of voters who know nothing about how the country runs, give belongers and naturalization prior to election, pretend to address the wilderness at Prospect Reef and pretend to make it look like you are making plans to expand the airport runway; however if the people are serious they should see that you are just a c** artist with no vision for the country or its people.
Your only claim to fame is elaborate parties, failed economy and excessive taxes that burden the public while you live the life using the treasury as your personal bank account and giving your self a raise greater than any member of the US congress. I wonder how Jasmine Crocket would feel to know that you make more money than her.
