Premier to attend OECS Authority meeting today

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has left for St Kitts to participate in the 74th Meeting of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Authority, which commences today, February 14 and ends on February 15.

Premier Wheatley will be accompanied by Xyrah Wheatley, Assistant Secretary in the International Affairs Secretariat.

In a statement, Premier Wheatley highlighted the significance of engaging in substantive dialogue with regional counterparts, noting that his attendance is to continue to promote the overall socio-economic and political interests of the Virgin Islands.

“As leader of Government business, I will seek to further engage in strategic discussions with our regional partners as we strive together towards a sustainable future that is in alignment with our collective priority areas,” Premier Wheatley stated.

The OECS, as an inter-governmental organisation, plays a pivotal role in promoting regional integration, economic harmonisation, and sustainable development among its Eastern Caribbean members.

As the supreme decision-making body, the OECS Authority sets the strategic direction and oversees the functions of the organisation, making this meeting a critical platform for advancing regional collaboration.

In Premier Wheatley’s absence, Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services Labour and Trade, Lorna Smith, will assume the role of acting Premier from February 13 to February 15.

This participation is crucial for the territory as it seeks to play a constructive role in the OECS, particularly in areas of mutual interest that are vital for the region’s progress and the well-being of its people.
