Premier to lead territory-wide cleanup initiative

Premier Andrew Fahie will be heading a territorial clean-up that is expected to occur in the coming months.

With the issue of waste management plaguing many districts throughout the territory, Premier Fahie is taking the charge over the next six months to launch a complete clean-up.

Deputy Secretary in the Premier’s Office, Geraldine Ritter-Freeman expects the involvement of all community groups in this venture including non-governmental organisations and residents.

“While the government is seeking to coordinate this effort and provide the support and resources needed to achieve the set objectives, it is incumbent upon the communities to organise, mobilise and to collectively clean up our territory,” Ritter-Freeman said.

Meanwhile the sister island of Virgin Gorda has already started a similar project thanks to both the Department of Waste Management and the Recovery and Development Agency joining forces.

Ritter-Freeman said “the wider community has also taken the initiative to clean up select areas, such as graveyards, beaches and national parks, which is expected to continue.”

This project is expected to continue in the Ninth District on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14 with an independent clean-up in personal and community spaces and all residents are encouraged to participate.

Premier Fahie will be making an official statement on the territorial clean up in observance of Earth Day on April 22.
