Premier to press for climate justice at Dubai conference

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley is attending the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) from today, November 30 to December 6 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The objective of this 28th annual United Nations (UN) climate change conference is to determine the responsibilities of governments, and other global leaders to accelerate actions towards combatting the effects of climate change.

Premier Wheatley has been a strong advocate for climate justice over the years, particularly for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which he said are especially vulnerable to the ill-effects of climate change and need support to build climate resilience.

Dr Wheatley commented that the COP28 meeting presents an excellent opportunity to advocate in an international forum for the needs of SIDS.

“We will advance for climate justice, where major polluters recognise their responsibility to assist those disproportionately affected, in adaption and mitigation, by adopting metrics which properly assess eligibility for concessional finance,” the Premier said.

He added: “We will also promote the Virgin Islands’ readiness to receive funding and investment due to our advanced legislative framework, our Climate Change Trust Fund, and a bevy of costed approved projects.”

COP28 will explore the climate-health nexus, where bilateral discussions on health concerns and implications of climate change will be held.

The Premier’s delegation includes Health Minister Vincent Wheatley; Climate Change officer in the Ministry of Natural Resources & Climate Change, Angela Burnett-Penn; and Acting United Kingdom/European Union Representative, Tracy Bradshaw.

  4. EXCUSE says:

Just trying to justify why he is going…. what a POINTLESS exercise. Lets all be honest here, I doubt he will push for anything, and if he does, it will be in a poorly-researched, poorly-presented manner. There is 0 chance that anyone will do anything with a request from the premier of a country of 30,000 people…. so this is just another excuse for him to use taxpayers money for a vacation with a select few of his friends….

Let’s try for BVI infrastructure justice first. We can look for government revenue accountability justice while we’re at it. The two issues may be related.

  6. well says:

try to link Anegada to some of that $420million

  7. justified says:

they have promised $420million for countries affected not that much but $14million could be earmarked for the BVI if he puts the case forward, better than the $7million both NDP & VIP have wasted in the past

He is the Minister of Finance and standing finance is in progress and he is in Dubai, and I understand his deputy is travelling as well. What kind of madness is this?

This trip makes no sense when we are burning trash in Pockwood pond like there is no tomorrow killing people on WE and St John. Premier Sl** Wande and the A** Clown Brigade need to actually do some work rather than just traveling as though their lives depended on getting on a plane.

  10. Smack Dabb says:

Sl** Wande to delegates in Dubai – You guys are killing us with pollution.

Delegates to Sl** Wande – Your predecessor who you have never denounced was trying to kill people in the US and Canada with drugs from somewhere. Go away.

Sl** Wande to us – I when to Dubai and had productive conversations

  11. @ EXCUSE says:

well at least , it was not the fault of the (
UK , rankin , commissioner Cindy, or walwyn ~ this time ) and the egomaniac from the yello site ( WON’T ) get energized and go on a blogging spree rampage , spitting out his broken down record racist lyrics on us , and for that , we are thankful

  12. Educate says:

People of the BVI – Your money is being wasted. There is no climate crisis. Please get the facts for yourselves at this website:

I wish that I could give your post multiple thumbs up. It’s a giant hoax that is making a few people an awful lot of money. Look at this “delegation” travelling to “speak up for climate justice.” The travel, the hotels, the Grandees who are all getting another junket on the taxpayers’ dime. And NOT ONE of the apocalyptic predictions of an “existential crisis” has come true. Not a single, solitary one.

  14. Concern Citizens - BVI says:

This young man – Premier Wheatley seems to be a Travelling, Speaking and Entertainment Leader instead of performing his duties

Every month he is travelling somewhere. Let’s call him the “The Travelling Premier”.

When we had the recent flood from tropical storm Phillipe he was not here

Now we have the standing finance committee which is a very important part of his duties – he is not here

When the UK takeover the BVI he will not be here either.
