Premier’s budget trespassing on our common sense

Myron Walwyn.

Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn has accused the government of trespassing on the common sense of the people following the budget presentation by Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley yesterday.

He argued that there were several deficiencies in the budget and pointed out that it was missing critical support for areas such as small business development, homelessness, relief for high electricity costs, and for seniors within the community.

Walwyn said one of his areas of concern is the National Business Bureau, which was disbanded once the Virgin Islands Party administration entered office back in 2019.

According to the Sixth District Representative, even though the Premier mentioned the Bureau in the budget speech, there was only a $27,000 allocation placed for the item.

“When I glanced through [the budget estimates], there’s $27,000 placed in the budget for the Business Bureau, and I’m saying to myself, this is another attempt by the Premier, it appears, to trespass on the good common sense of the people of this country,” Walwyn said. “What can $27,000 do for businesses that are on life support?”

Walwyn accused the Premier of selling a pipe dream and argued that the economy cannot get moving unless the business community is doing well. He added that this is a simple message that he has been trying to get the government to understand.

“It is the businesses in the country that keep people employed. It is the businesses that keep people employed that allow you to be able to get your payroll taxes and other taxes because you need people to be employed,” Walwyn expressed.

He added: “If the government is only going to budget $27,000 for businesses that are having a difficult time, then it says to me that the government isn’t serious about business.”

Walwyn further pointed out that there were no provisions contained in the budget for crime and for the serious unemployment problem that is facing the territory.

“I am not pleased with what I hear today and the Premier seems to be selling a pipe dream and he appears to be the only person falling asleep to his lullaby,” Walwyn commented.

Keep the fire blazing under their behinds Walwyn. The only thing they can say is the WALL, the wall that they are talking about cannot compare to the thousands of the tax payers monies that is spent on first class tickets, 5 star accommodations for them and their spouse and others. And we all know who the others are. The spouses and the others were NOT ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE SO THEREFORE SHOULD NOT BE USING OR IS ENTITLED TO SPEND/USE THE TAXPAYERS MONEY. IF THE SPOUSES AND OTHERS WANT TO TRAVEL, THEY SHOULD BE MADE TO COVER THEIR OWN TRAVEL EXPENSES OR STAY THEIR A..ES AT HOME.

Myron is an excellent leader but I think they will get the same result like last time if he pushes to be leader. Leave that alone. He is needed back at the ministry of education but he just need to keep himself in check. Education needs real help and he can do it

  8. Bla bla bla bla says:

Myron is talking hot air out his @ss. When people go into business it is to make a profit not get hands out from the tax payers. $27k can do a lot for marketing sending them to the right departments and banks when they want to take out a business loan or even refinance. The government is not in business to be giving away free money to businesses and if they are successful then they do not need finance from any institution.

And our social security money used for friends, family and boyfriend could have been used to do much more than a wall.
