Prison responsibilities shifts, back under Health Ministry

Her Majesty’s Prison has been shifted back to the Ministry of Health & Social Development.

Under the previous National Democratic Party administration, prison responsibilities were placed under the Ministry of Education & Culture where former legislator Myron Walwyn served as minister.

But, speaking with BVI News on Sunday, Health Minister Carvin Malone said prison responsibilities were originally under his ministry.

“It was shifted from Health to Education in 2004 because the then Minister was the Finance Minister and the ministry was overloaded with subjects and it was shifted that way. But, Health was the original home,” Malone explained.

The minister further said he believes prison responsibilities are best served under his ministry.

“That’s where all the social programmes are. And if you talk about reform, all of the agents of reform are within the Ministry of Health & Social Development,” he reasoned.

While stating that no meetings have been held between himself and the Superintendent of Prison yet, Malone said plans will be developed for the penitentiary now that it is back under Health & Social Development.

The prison responsibilities are jointly shared between Governor Augustus Jaspert and Malone.
