Project rush? Gov’t rolls out 15 projects in one year
The Dr Natalio Wheatley administration has rolled out or significantly advanced at least 15 major projects in just over one year, with publicly disclosed values totalling approximately $26.6 million.
The surge comes as the territory moves closer to another general election, a season that triggers the familiar complaint — that governments tend to accelerate highly visible infrastructure works as elections approach.
BVI News reviewed government and Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) project announcements from September 1, 2025 to September 1, 2026. The review looked at major projects that received contracts, started construction or moved into significant design and planning stages during that period.
At least 15 projects were identified, carrying known contracts or project components worth approximately $26.6 million. However, the true value is expected to be much higher as several projects – including the Agricultural Complex and Immigration Detention Centre – do not yet have final construction costs.
Comparison to previous years
The rollout of projects in the past year is noticeably different from the earlier years of the Wheatley administration, which returned to office following the April 2023 general election.
RDA public information shows that contracts signed during 2023 totalled approximately $7 million. Major projects at the time included the new Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre, while other recovery projects were already under construction.
Activity continued through 2024 and the first eight months of 2025, but several of the government’s biggest projects were still in planning, design or procurement. This means millions were already being committed between 2023 and August 2025, but the latest 12-month period stands out for the concentration of large, visible projects being advanced at the same time.
A major factor is the government’s $100 million loan facility, secured in late 2024 to fund infrastructure. Some $34.8 million was later earmarked for roads.
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has presented the increased activity as part of his administration’s wider infrastructure programme. In December 2025, while announcing the Sabbath Hill road project, Dr Wheatley signalled that considerably more work was coming in 2026, describing that project as “just the beginning.”

All of these are really daybtonday maintenance projects that should be routines that are planned in.
There are no new projects of any value.

Why exactly are we bigging up a couple of maintenance and design projects and one of them an Encironmental disaster in Road Town of our own choosing that will likely cost us another $1 Million.

Where is the West End Ferry Terminal??
I think I understand why they didn’t include it, the story talks about newly contracted projects and I think the West End Ferry Terminal was reallocated this year but was first contracted some years ago. I don’t think it’s a new project and has been on the books for some time although they revised the project this year.
Starting a million things and could never finish or the project ends up drawn out over a long period of time, why nothing on the list status is “Completed”??? Riddle me that

This looks like another case of politicians taking voters for fools. After years of limited progress, suddenly millions of dollars’ worth of projects are being announced or pushed forward as an election approaches. The real question is how many of these projects will actually be completed and whether we will be left paying for delays, overruns, and unfinished works. Rushing infrastructure projects for political gain should be illegal, especially when it leads to wasteful spending and poor value for the public. Voters deserve long-term planning and accountability, not a last-minute construction blitz designed to win votes.
