Public Service General Orders ‘put to rest’

Deputy Governor David Archer, Jr.

Deputy Governor David Archer Jr said the historical general orders that govern the way public service officers function have now been put to rest.

Archers said the orders, which date back to the early 1970s, will be replaced with new and modern policies to guide how persons conduct business within the public service.

The general orders are expected to be replaced by the Public Service Management Code, which is a transition from a code to a bill, Archer explained.

He said drafting instructions are being completed and the code will soon be advanced to an actual piece of legislation.

But Archer pointed out that there is still much work to be done, addressing the longstanding issue of customer service in particular.

We’ve put immense effort into ensuring our customer service product throughout the government is exceptional,” the Deputy Governor stated.

He also noted that a new customer service centre has been developed and introduced, which features agents who are able to serve in a similar fashion to a high-quality institution.

Archer said he is not naive about the new gains, pointing to a recent incident where he received several messages on WhatsApp about poor behaviour shown by some public servants.

“While most persons might respond in anguish or frustration, my response is, this is the way to hold us accountable,” Archer said. “This is a way for us to answer each and every concern, and the reason why we have developed and implemented a customer service care centre for the public service.”

Archer promised that a live chat will also be launched in the coming days, calling this a step to ensure the public can get direct and immediate feedback to questions and concerns.

  1. Public Officers or Public Servants says:

I think that the public service referring to themselves as officers needs to be stopped. They are the servants of the public not officers.

When is Government run like a business. Just learned again about a person not doing any work for the salary, but just moved from department to department “getting another chance”. Get a back-bone and have people work for their pay.

  3. Hmmm says:

@concerned it is rough when those same employees run to politician friends who then pressure the supervisors and victimize them in the process. It is still happening. Governor Rankins as head of the civil servants you need to keep private sessions with department heads, without the staff because many turn to politics to get their way screwing up the system.

  4. LOL says:

Maybe by 2045 we will have its first reading. SMFH!!

  5. Failure says:

DG Archer you are certainly a failure when it comes to transforming the civil service. Look how long you have been in this position and customer service is still poor through out the entire government sector yet ever year your only focus is on your pioneering greatness conference but we can’t see no results in the public service you are over. Does not add up please go sit down and remove yourself from the post cause you are certainly a fraud.
