Put money where your mouth is, Premier told

“I need you to put your money where your mouth is …  to ensure that education is well looked after” — Walwyn

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr D Orlando Smith has been asked to give a deserving budget allocation to the Ministry of Education.

Education Minister Myron Walwyn made that request after his ministry was allocated the second largest share of this year’s $299.5 million budget.

His ministry is projected to receive 15 percent of the budget, which is approximately $44,928,804 million.

Put your money where your mouth is

While speaking on NDP Radio this week, Premier Smith had underscored that education is a key factor in the territory’s overall development.

Walwyn seemingly used the Premier’s statement to ask for additional funds for his ministry.

“I am very pleased to hear you (Premier) say education underpins everything that is done in health and all the various ministries …”

“I need you to put your money where your mouth is and understand that we are the ones who have to train the folks to do the wonderful plans that my colleagues are speaking about. So I will give you a chance during the budget process and I know you won’t disappoint me to ensure that education is well looked after.”

The budget process

The 2018 budget process will continue with the Standing Finance Committee examining the budget document.

During this assessment, public accounting officers will be invited to explain and rationalise their submissions and address questions the committee members may have.

On the completion of the Standing Finance process, the budget will be debated in the House of Assembly.

The Standing Finance commenced on Tuesday, March 20.

Somebody like they don’t understand their place…this is utter disrespect and I think the Premier need to just take a lil’ bit rub off from Donald Trump…enough said.

  2. good to great says:

    more money for walls

    • Oh says:

Walwyn has worked TIRELESSLY for the young people of this Territory! That is a FACT!!! He is hands down the hardest working Minister in Government right now and will be the highest vote getter again come next election.

      • Yawn says:

If he really were about the youths he would have had at least one one proper school building up and running between the first and second districts…..he would have realized the need for a proper functioning youth and sports affairs department with structured and beneficial regular youth activists addressing all ages and not one or two a year. More to be said. To be continued.

What kinda weed you smoke? Baldwyn is a d——-, a gr—– man. He … need to take a seat. The premier needs to put a muzzel on him.

  3. SMH says:

The same man who tell Mitch he was out of place for disrespecting the Premier. Now look. Turn around giving the same Premier hard word too. Just amazing!

  6. hmmm says:

Myron please to stop. Right now all sectors are in need. Stop tearing down the place worst than it already is. Set proper examples for the same students you working hard for. Stop calling out each other in public so. Some of these issues can be addressed in standing finance and cabinet. Its that simple.

  7. true says:

Needs another $1.5million to finish the wall….

  8. M n M says:

So sad no one is in jail. So sad poor we the tax payers

  9. Diplomat says:

True, education is vital and critical to the territory’s growth, development and sustainability. The BVI has been devasted by two Cat 5 catastrophic hurricanes, Irma and Maria and has a bucket of needs to rebuild and to carry out routine day-to-day operations. Education is not the only need. Every ministry, department, function……etc always feels that they are not getting enough money to operate at desired level. Well, the reality is there is limited funding and it is unlikely that entities will get the budget they are advocate for. Consequently, it must provide the best service with the resources provided.

Moreover, I’m assuming that the budget is discussed in caucus before the Premier and MoF brings it to the HOA. Once that occurs, should not government members be supportive of the budget? The time to be lobbying for resources is in caucus. Cannot throw the Premier under the bus with put your money where your mouth and similar comments.

  10. Das says:

I thought the minister said he knew the Bible.

I guess a new mote has filled his eye since removing the one from —–.

  11. Woke says:

I swear everyone read the headline and went straight to comment.

I need you to put your money where your mouth is and understand that we are the ones who have to train the folks to do the wonderful plans that my colleagues are speaking about. So I will give you a chance during the budget process and I know you won’t disappoint me to ensure that education is well looked after.”

    What is disrespectful about this?

  12. Well sah says:

No wonder he feels he could talk to us and treat us how he likes, see how he speaks to his own Premier and leader of his party. And then want to call out Mitch. Terrible attitude and choice of words – but continue to show your true colors – we loving it!

  13. Come on folks! says:

I listened to the talk show and this stuff is more sensationalization more than anything. Minister Walwyn was making a light moment in the transition of the conversation. Sometimes hearing something and reading something evokes different things. This is much to do about nothing. Even the premier chuckled when Walwyn said it because he knew it was a joke. Why are we soo eager for negativity and confusion in this place? We need a lot of prayer. Irma’s destruction is not the only problem that we have.

  14. Father help us! says:

What you are reading didn’t happen the way it sounds to you as you read. It was a joke between the two leaders. Are we a country now that you can’t have humor anymore? Where is the BVi heading?
