Rankin to retire! Meet the BVI’s next governor

Mr Daniel Pruce has been appointed as the next Governor of the British Virgin Islands.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has confirmed the appointment of Mr Daniel Pruce as the next Governor of the British Virgin Islands in succession to Governor John Rankin.

Pruce will take up his appointment in January 2024.

According to a bulletin from the UK, Governor Rankin will be retiring from the diplomatic rervice. However, it is not clear if the Governor will be taking a permanent retirement from public service.

Governor Rankin is set to end his term as Governor of the BVI at the end of this year.

Governor Rankin assumed his current office at a very critical time in the BVI — when the territory was dealing with the implications of the Commission of Inquiry, which his predecessor commissioned. Soon after Governor Rankin took office, former Premier Andrew Fahie was arrested on drug related charges in the United States.

Since then, Governor Rankin has been busy with ensuring the COI recommendations are implemented by the elected government; something he said has been moving slowly.

Though he appears to be even-tempered, Governor Rankin has spoken frankly about the issues affecting the BVI, including the thriving narcotics trade that he said isn’t often spoken about. He also recently stated that he may have to use additional resources to get matters addressed in the BVI, a statement which greatly displeased Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley.

  2. A revolving door. says:

Ever since I was a child donkey years ago, all the Governors sent from the UK to the VI has always been white men. One leaves and is replaced with another. Not even a woman has been sent regardless of race.

Why is that? Something is wrong with that picture. Do you mean to tell me there are no people of color or women in the UKs diplomatic service who can fill such posts?

The VI is a majority black populated territory, and I think its unacceptable in 2023 that there is not the slightest attempt by the UK to send a governor who looks like the population it serves.

It does not have to be everytime, but at least try which they have not IMO.

We as a country has to decide our way forward relative to our future relationship with the UK because the way I see it we cannot continue with a deputy governor understudy if you will indefinitely.

Now I understand many of you are against independence. I believe that has a lot to do with our elected officials who have let us down and whom many has list confidence in, but we should not cut off our noises to spite our faces.

We need to broaden our lens and see the larger picture.

Our elected officials needs to demonstrate they can lead and are worthy of the publics trust to take us beyond this current relationship with the UK.

They need to prepare for the day we can govern ourselves thru concrete action, but in the interim the UK can do better.

I welcome the new governor like all others before him. However I look forward to a day when this revolving door of UK appointed governors stops. Hopefully I will see that day before I die.

Time to grow up and stop with the immaturity. We will all suffer as a result. If you don’t have anything good say then don’t. I welcome the new Governor to our shores when he comes and wish him well. Likewise thank you to Governor Rankin for your service. Best wishes as you retire. Be the change you desire to see.

The mentality of UK Officials in the UK is still a racist one and anti woman. Not one black Governor in the 21st century nor not one from the Caribbean and the UK have the guts to be proud of having the first woman Governor in the 21st century in Bermuda in 2020. If this is not racists and feminist then what is.

Most blatant example of colonization and domination, the governor from abroad system. Why bvi can’t elect their own governor? Who’s paying his salary? In England all their politicians are elected, the king is only symbolic. Does the king appoint a governor to citizens in England.?

What part of it is racist? I don’t get it. Why is it racist when black people want self rule? Don’t the Chinese rule china? Don’t the Indians rule India, don’t the Arabs rule Arabia? Don’t white people rule Europe? Black people don’t have that kind of love for each other,Why Africa is the only third world continent.
Aren’t white people killing their own in Europe, when it’s black people, that’s the first thing people point out.

    Race don’t matter

  19. Fix? says:

How does race not matter? This is one of the reasons black people weak. Black people are here because of race. The whites were not slaves, they owned the slaves, they didn’t own the Chinese as slaves, they didn’t own the Indians as slaves, only black peoples, when did race cease to matter? Was it during apartheid? Was it during Jim Crow? Was it when they gave black people syphilis? When? When did race cease to matter? Why black people weak. White man continually kicks his dog, but the faithful hound will always kiss ass and love his master regardless.

Please I can tell u are mis informed or uneducated or don’t read . For your information “revolving door” the present governor of Bermuda which is a British territory and way better than dirty BVI is a black woman who took over from Governor Rankin before he came here .. some of you Tolans are the worst and don’t like change shut the hell up please

  21. Well versed says:

By the way the current governor of Bermuda is a black woman and she took over from governor Rankin when he left to come to BVI to deal with the corruption here. You all act as if BVI is all that and the place is so nasty and run down .. stfu . Everything in Tola is backwards , go educate urself. The white man will always be sent there to deal with u fool including Sl**ande..

  22. @ Revolving Door says:

You have some good points, but the voters just elected the same bunch of bad leaders, so neither can be trusted. Getting the UK more involved in restoring good governance is needed.

  23. Hi noon says:

Yh black crime’s the feature 25/366. Will the power full appoint someone to inquire into their activities? I self regulate all the time.

  24. Uh says:

Black VI native here. Whites were slaves (eg the irish), every nationality and race were slaves or had slave at some point in history. The slave trade is alive and well on the African continent, in several African and Middle Eastern countries

The Caribbean African is weak because we downplay and label each other (island ppl anyone?) As well as operate with no care for investment, legacy or common sense, as long as we profit from our endeavors now.

We bind our own hands, the rest of the world just benefiting from our ignorance. When you find a donkey, when you find a tree….

  25. Fix? says:

@ uh, yes slavery had existed since biblical times, but the Europeans instituted a new form of slavery. Before, people became slaves when they lost a war or were raided, captured. ‘They’, were slaves, for a time. The Irish were not actually slaves, the British , in their fight with the Irish, and only the Irish that fought them, would punish them with slavery, for a period of time, only the British. not like the black people, who were slaves to every race, even the Indians, not like the black people, who’s entire race were slaves, wether you fought or not, not like the black people who were slaves for life, not like the black people, who were slaves just for being born black. Yet black people are so passionate to defend slavery, and we wonder why only the black man continent keep screaming for United Nations to feed them. While black people coninue to do the white mans work.
For hundreds of years, Europeans took the best Africa had, when you go to the auction to buy a slave, who you want? Shaquille? Or Kevin hart? The bigger you were the more you were worth.
