RDA inks contracts for BVIHSA, Road Town projects

The Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) has signed a contract valued at $463,087.20 for major renovations at the Major Peebles Wing of the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital, as the government continues efforts to upgrade healthcare infrastructure across the Virgin Islands.

The contract was signed between the RDA and Supreme Construction Engineering Management Services for the Major Peebles Wing Clinics Lobby Renovation Project, according to a government press release issued recently.

Health and Social Development Minister Vincent Wheatley said the project formed part of the government’s ongoing efforts to modernise public health facilities and improve the delivery of healthcare services.

“I am pleased to join you this afternoon for the signing of this important contract, which marks another significant step in our continued commitment to strengthening the territory’s healthcare infrastructure,” Wheatley said.

According to the release, the works will include renovations to the Road Town Clinic lobby, demolition of the existing staircase and construction of a new staircase extending to roof level, as well as refurbishment of the lobby bathroom. The project will also cover renovations to the Outpatient Clinic lobby and construction of a new storage area.

A new elevator shaft will be constructed from the front entrance stairs to the second level to facilitate the installation of an elevator. Renovations will also be carried out on roof-level office space, while the building façade will be upgraded and fitted with two new external signs.

“These upgrades are necessary to improve the functionality and ease of movement through the facility, enhance the experience of patients and staff, support the continuity and efficiency of clinic operations, and enhance the overall appearance of the Major Peebles Wing,” Wheatley stated.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Health Services Authority, Dr June Samuel, welcomed the project and said it would address long-standing infrastructure challenges affecting operations at the hospital.

“The renovations will significantly improve patient flow, staff operations, and the overall delivery of care within the Major Peebles Wing. This is a timely and much-needed investment in our healthcare system,” Dr Samuel said.

The contract was awarded through a national competitive bidding process, and the government said the procurement process reflected its commitment to transparency, accountability and responsible management of public funds.

When we getting our new sign. We want to waste money on a sign before anything else.

Or change it back to Peebles, leave it as is and spend a bit of money on the infrastucture.
