Regular hurricane season forecast, residents still told to prepare for 13 named storms

Though a virtually ‘normal’ hurricane season is anticipated this year, residents are being told to finalise preparations for the 2019 season which is predicted to bring more than a dozen named storms to the region.

This according to the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) which revealed details of a recent forecast published by the Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project dated June 4.

“The report anticipates a ‘near average probability’ of a storm making landfall in the Caribbean and predicts the region will see 13 named storms, of which five may have the potential to develop into major storms of Category 3 or stronger intensity,” the DDM said.

Director of the DDM Sharleen DaBreo said persons should ensure they have everything in place to be fully prepared for what may be in store for the next six months.

“We all know that life gets more hectic when we are watching a storm approach. We strongly encourage everyone to check on their emergency kits and review other preparedness measures early so that they can identify any additional items or repairs that may be needed now,” DaBreo said.

Preparedness tips will be shared by the DDM to assist families and businesses throughout the month of June and will be made available on the department’s official website and social media platforms.

The 2019 season officially commenced on June 1 and ends on November 30.
