Residents reject using Admin Complex as cultural centre

Political commentator Cindy Rosan’s suggestion that the Ralph T. O’Neal Administration Complex be transformed into a major cultural centre has drawn pushback from residents, with several insisting the building should return to its original purpose of housing government offices.

The complex has been largely out of operation since Hurricanes Irma and Maria severely damaged it in 2017. As the government continues to work on restoring the building, ministries and departments have been operating from rented private spaces across Road Town and elsewhere.

However, Rosan argued on Facebook that the government should consider converting part or all of the property into a National Museum, National Library and Cultural Events Centre capable of preserving BVI history while generating economic activity.

“Our history is an asset. Our culture is an asset. Our identity is an asset,” Rosan wrote, calling for a feasibility study and public discussion before a final decision.

However, the proposal received considerable resistance from residents.

“The Admin Complex is the official home of government business,” one resident responded, adding that the building was built for that purpose.

Another commenter argued, “Surely we can find other suitable areas for a museum, etc. The CAC was designated as the hub for government administration and should remain as such.”

One online user suggested that cultural facilities could be developed elsewhere.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley said in June that major interior works were moving towards implementation and the government remained committed to reopening the complex in 2027.

In the meantime, residents continue to bemoan the high cost of rental fees and the inconvenience of travelling to multiple locations when residents have to do business with multiple government departments.

A building that was built for a purpose of being a hub for government ministries, where we can go from department to department without having to drive from fish bay to town and back etc. Are these people losing their marbles? Is Cindy on team Mark with this proposal?

Our tax dollars are filling landlords pockets while the building sits vacant. Please have some common sense and stop trying to fool us the people once again. Setta IDIOTS

So… Rent a public funded space to the public (folks won’t pay) and then take that money, from the public renters (remembering they wont pay), and continue to rent spaces from the public (friends of friends) with funds from the public space you are renting out ( not getting paid for)…. Am I missing something? Keep having fun.

10 years to repair and outfit this building is unacceptable in my humble opinion. This is political grandstanding at the least. Sorry leadership.
