Residents urged to stop sharing graphic photos of murder victims
Deputy Premier Julian Fraser has urged residents to stop circulating graphic images of murder victims, warning that the practice is not only insensitive to grieving families but could also carry legal consequences.
Fraser issued the warning recently in the House of Assembly while reflecting on the murder of prominent businessman Kai de Castro, whose killing sent shockwaves across the territory.
“There was a photograph being circulated of the victim,” Fraser told lawmakers. “I want people to know that it is a crime to circulate those photographs.”
“If you get them from your friends or whoever has them circulating, delete them. You can be sued,” he added.
Following de Castro’s killing a few weeks ago, images purportedly showing the businessman after his death began circulating in local social media and messaging groups. The images triggered concern and condemnation, with some residents also questioning their authenticity and suggesting they may have been altered and did not accurately depict the victim or the circumstances in which he was found.
Fraser said regardless of how such images are obtained, residents should consider the pain their circulation can cause relatives and loved ones.
“It’s denigrating. It’s not kind for the family, and it should stop,” he stressed.
The Deputy Premier also used the opportunity to appeal to young people to be more mindful of their surroundings and the company they keep amid continued concern about violent crime in the territory.
“We cannot afford to lose any more Kais, not in the fashion in which this took place. I encourage young people to be vigilant, to know who your company is,” Fraser said.
De Castro’s killing prompted widespread mourning across the BVI, particularly within the business community, where he was well-known and provided employment to residents.

I agree with Mr. Fraser based on Professional journalism ethics which require balancing the public’s right to know against the immense risk of causing further trauma to the victim’s family and disrespecting human dignity. The public, like in any place else, likes to gravitate to sensationalism while not being sensitive to the pain and grief of families, friends and associates..
