Resigning after 2019 election is my greatest political regret

Former Fourth District Representative Mark Vanterpool has described his decision to resign after winning his seat in the 2019 general election as the greatest regret of his political life, pledging never to repeat it.

The People’s Leadership Movement leader appeared on the Talking Points programme earlier this week and said he had disrespected the electorate’s decision and would draw on that experience as he sought to represent the district again.

“I have had the greatest regret of my political life is in 2019, when I resigned from being elected, disrespecting the people’s decision, and that’s a regret that I always have,” Vanterpool said.

“And I would pledge definitely that would never happen again to my people who have always supported me,” he added.

Vanterpool submitted his resignation letter on March 5, 2019, after winning the Fourth District seat. He addressed it to the Clerk of the House of Assembly rather than the Speaker, as the Constitution required. He subsequently reversed his decision and requested to be sworn in.

Then Speaker Julian Willock refused to swear him in, maintaining that he had accepted the resignation. Vanterpool sought judicial review, and on May 2, 2019, Justice Ann-Marie Smith ruled in his favour. He eventually took the oath on July 16 that year.

Vanterpool said he wanted to give back to the territory, which had provided him with education, business opportunities and the chance to build a successful life.

“I am at a stage in my life where it is now time for me to leave a legacy,” Vanterpool said.

He committed to serving for four years regardless of his position in the House.

“I mean that if I get elected this time, wherever I am, opposition, government, wherever I am, backbench, wherever I would be, I would like this time to spend my next four years in the House of Assembly, really trying to steer the country in the right direction,” he said.

Vanterpool said a representative’s first responsibility was to constituents and their families, including their access to education and employment. Projects within the constituency and the wider territory, he said, came after understanding and addressing those individual needs.

And what do we have to do to tell if you are telling the truth?

    Elect you.

    I don’t think so.

You treat the the voters with the deepest disrespect by resigning after they voted for you last time.

    You wasted their vote then.

Not one single VIslander should waste their vote on you again.

We happy not to find out whether you will or will not do it again, by giving you no votes.

Good thing he can’t unwrap the BVI. That was a boss move he did unwrapping his vehicle. He showed us his true colors again. He should stay and run his stores.

What mark has done not only for the people of the 4th but persons from all over this territory, can never be over shadowed by what
took place in 2019, the people of the 4th will put him back in easy, just look at

  2. Hmm says:

He regret resigning. Hmm. Was that before or after finding out about the greedy bill pension. Was that before or after he was playing Mr photography man behind Lorna while was signing betrayal papers to sign up with arguably the worst performing government these islands have seen yet. Was that before or after the bank of asia mess that seems yo be connected to a certain family name. What else been taking place behind closed doors that might later come up as a regret? We must choose carefully who we give power to. Not all that glitters is gold. It is good to regret but that don’t get the vote.

    Never me again.

Years ago a relative vowed when a certain brown grasshopper jumped ship and crossed the floor that they would never waste another vote on him. They died keeping that promise.

I never took on that family member and instead continued to support the rep. Big mouth. Action? Hmmm. Left much to be desired.

Despite their track record of hopping about to be in ting, in 2019 I wasted a vote. Big time. I watched, disgusted, as the chameleon played his favorite game of hippity hop with us, taking us in the district for a pack of fools. He made sure he only showed up when it was absolutely necessary to guarantee his staying in the ring and qualifying for a regular pay check and all the extra perks that went along with it.

And to wield power. Don’t forget that. Then the so-called statesman threw his towel in the ring and declared he had enough.

Can you believe he now here trying to waste our time again? You had your turn. Boss man, go chill out.

Fool me once …… and btw keep that pity part. Ane goin’ work.
