Restaurants now allowed to reopen for dine-in services

Approved restaurants in the British Virgin Islands will once again be allowed to host residents at their establishments for dining.

This is one of government’s latest Cabinet decisions, which is part of the territory’s move to gradually reopen the economy internally.

“Cabinet decided that restaurants will be allowed to reopen for dining purposes in accordance with the social distancing guidelines, effective May 24, 2020,” Premier Andrew Fahie stated during a national broadcast on Thursday.

With Cabinet’s decision to also allow a maximum gathering of up to 50 persons, Premier Fahie warned establishments that their businesses will first have to seek the necessary certification to be allowed to hold up to that quantity.

He said: “They have to have a certain amount of social distancing because although we have opened up the number of persons from 20 … you just can’t do it automatically.”

“You have to get into contact with the Environmental Health Social Distancing Task Force and they will come and inspect the place, and based on your square footage, even if you can hold more than 50, that is what we are going up to now,” he added.

New beach hours

In the meantime, Cabinet also extended the hours allowed for residents to frequent the beaches in the territory.

Starting Sunday May 24, all beaches except for The Baths and Devil’s Bay on Virgin Gorda, will now be opened from 6 am to 3 pm daily for exercise and therapy.

Minister of Natural Resources Vincent Wheatley said The Baths and Devil’s Bay will reopen to the public ‘soon’ after the two beaches have completed several enhancements.

The Premier better get a grip on this situation and really fast. Nobody really cares about the fact that this never happened before and nobody has the playbook, you lobbied the voters of the Territory to entrust the well-being of these islands in your hands as leader and we want you to LEAD! Pretending that the economy is opening up while providing ZERO avenues for small business and unemployed persons to access cash/capital is just foolish. Nobody is saying empty the reserves and pay everyone’s bills, all people are asking is that some small stimulus be rolled out to give the economy a shock because as it stands the place is SLOW! Most persons have depleted their savings shopping for lock-downs and paying other bills with another month end approaching and all we have heard is government giving free water, garbage collection and other frivolous nonsense as stimulus. Is the aim of Government to bring people to their knees thereby making them even more powerful? Something is definitely at play here.

Some restaurants and bars have been open for the entire period. The powers that be chose to turn a blind eye to it.

My vote has been long gone. Three main things I would like to see Adopted in BVI politics is: (1) Proof of Success in business as an owner and success in the management of one or more other business. (2) Term limit set to two terms, (3) The premier run At-Large and (4) The law or policy under which politicians continues to be paid a substantial percentage of their salaries after 2 Terms in office is Ridiculous and Needs to be Scrapped!
