Rift between inmates lands in court

An assault incident stemming from a rift between two inmates at Her Majesty’s Prison is now before the Magistrate’s Court.

Charged with common assault is Essadro Jefferson.

Jefferson pleaded not guilty to the offence which he is accused of committing against Shakeel Ryan. The trial commenced before Magistrate Christilyn Benjamin on Monday.

The court heard that the men — who are on remand on charges relating to the death of David Springette in 2017 — were coming from a court appearance on July 9, 2018, when the incident occurred.

The men were brought from the Balsam Ghut-based adult penitentiary in two separate vehicles. However, they crossed paths inside the reception area of the prison, the court heard.

Ryan, the complainant, testified that he entered the room unaware that Jefferson was behind the door where he could not see him. He told the court that as soon as he entered, he was headbutted by the accused and sustained a busted lip.

He said he had to quickly react by raising his cuffed hands to fend off any more attacks. They were separated by police and prison officers who were nearby at the time.

The incident lasted a few seconds, he further said.

 I was angry

Meanwhile, Prison Officer Kesena Okoro testified that he was in another room interviewing a new inmate when he heard a loud bang in the reception area.

He said he also saw the officers parting the men and ordering Jefferson to ‘stand down’.

The trial continues.
