Roadtown Wholesale launches historic rooftop solar system

Roadtown Wholesale Trading Ltd. (RTW) has officially commissioned what is being described as the Caribbean’s largest rooftop solar installation, marking a historic step for renewable energy in the BVI and setting a new benchmark for commercial solar projects across the region.

The solar installation was officially launched during a ceremony on July 9, and saw attendance from Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer, representatives of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC), renewable energy company YourEco, RTW executives and guests. The installation was executed through a partnership between RTW, BVIEC and YourEco.

The 1-megawatt rooftop solar system spans multiple buildings at RTW’s Pasea Estate and is expected to generate about 30 percent of the company’s annual electricity needs at the facility. The project is designed to reduce the retailer’s dependence on electricity generated from imported fossil fuels while improving its long-term energy resilience.

RTW Managing Director Jackie McDonagh described the project as one of the company’s most significant achievements since it began operating in the Virgin Islands more than six decades ago.

“Today marks one of the most significant milestones in RTW’s 65-year history. The launch of the Caribbean’s largest rooftop solar installation reflects our commitment to innovation, sustainability and responsible corporate leadership,” McDonagh said. “We are proud to partner with BVIEC and YourEco in delivering a project that benefits our business, our community and the future of the Virgin Islands.”

YourEco Chief Executive Officer Nick Spicer said the project proves that large commercial rooftops can produce substantial amounts of renewable energy while lowering electricity costs and carbon emissions.

“This project proves that commercial rooftops can deliver serious, bankable energy: lower bills, stronger resilience, and a meaningful reduction in carbon emissions,” Spicer said, adding that the system was designed to deliver reliable performance for decades.

In the meantime, the RTW project is expected to be the first of several major commercial rooftop solar developments in the territory.

Spicer told BVI News that YourEco is also moving ahead with rooftop solar installations at Tortola Pier Park, Clarence Thomas Ltd. and Nanny Cay Marina, signalling growing private-sector investment in renewable energy across the Virgin Islands.
