Rosan blasts organisers of Long Look 250th celebration

Morning Facts host Cindy Rosan has accused the government of overspending and politicising the recent Long Look 250th anniversary celebrations, while chastising Virgin Islanders who failed to support an event she described as a celebration of the territory’s shared heritage.
Speaking on her Facebook show, Rosan questioned reports that roughly $350,000 was allocated for the commemorative activities, arguing that the events did not justify such a price tag.
“There is nothing from the start to the finish that costs $350,000,” Rosan said, estimating the celebrations should not have cost more than $125,000. She also called on the government to disclose exactly how much was spent, though she doubted those figures would be made public.
Rosan further criticised the planning of the event, saying it should have been driven by people within the Seventh District instead of the Premier’s Office.
“I believe that was all politics. It was an opportunity to pass out the government’s money,” she alleged.
Despite those concerns, Rosan said she was disappointed by the number of Virgin Islanders who chose not to support the anniversary celebrations, insisting the importance of the event transcended district politics.
She argued that Long Look represents the foundation of the Virgin Islands, noting that the community was established after enslaved Africans purchased their freedom and that people escaping enslavement on other plantations also found refuge there.
“Every single breath in this BVI is attached to the history of Long Look. It is the foundation of the Virgin Islands and who we are as a free people,” Rosan said.
The controversial broadcaster urged residents to research their family history, contending that many Virgin Islanders would discover ancestral ties to Long Look through generations of migration and intermarriage. She also highlighted the community’s contribution to national development, pointing to its long list of prominent doctors, educators, politicians and senior public officials, including Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley.
“You cannot separate yourself from the history and the heritage of Long Look,” Rosan said. “If you do, then you’re not a Virgin Islander.”

People outside of the 7th district felt left out. We saw this for what it was…a political move for the Premier. He conveniently used the 250th Anniversary for his benefit and this is why support was poor. BTW…who decided who to invite for the gala event?
I would like to know the answer to that myself, especially since I supposedly come from that same heritage? Politics always spoils everything.

It’s interesting that Ms. Rosan is being labelled as “controversial” on this forum and elsewhere.
I don’t understand why some insist on labelling her this way. In my view, it appears that if you a person, a woman particulary, who speaks your mind and your truths, you get labelled as “controversial”.
If you do not agree with what she says, it’s your perogative. I personally do not see anything controversal about her. I like to see her ask the hard questions and raise some of these men’s blood pressures.
Some of you are just not comfortable with a woman speaking her mind and her truth. It’s makes you uncomfortable. Well, get a grip. Some women have bigger balls than some men, and know how to get things done.
I guarantee you this: If Ms Rosan was to be elected to the HOA, you can rest assured there will be some fireworks up in there, and some people would think twice before they voice their opinion and vote on matters.

The Long Look 25 first in freedom. The Long Look 25/community was the First Free Slave Community in the hemisphere. It preceded the Haitian defeat of Napoleon army, before thecUS’ declaration of independence from Great Britain, Haitian declaration of independence from France. Long Look was commemorating 250 years of freedom. It is a significant historical and heritage event. The whole territory should have been engaged, celebrating the event. Why it was not?
The territory had years to plan this event. Yet it was poorly planned, poorly attended, etc. What a missed opportunity. June 30 was an official holiday. However, it should have been celebrated not as an ordinary holiday that residents treat as a of rest and recuperation. The Long Look 25 was before the full physical emancipation of slavery. It was or should have been treated as a BIG F’ing deal! What a disappointment. The BVI came a long way but has a long way to go. Local ancestral Virgin Islanders need to take the lead in embracing and celebrating their history, heritage and culture. Hear dis ya! Others are not shy or ashamed to celebrate theirs. If we don’t embraced and celebrate ours who will?
60% of the up and coming generation have one and often two parents from down De island,DR,UK..Canada.. Philippines etc.They are born here and will count when the law changes..imbrace all.
