Rymer defends big businesses after Opposition Leader’s criticism

Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer has moved to defend big businesses after Opposition Leader Myron Walwyn sounded the alarm that unfair trade practices are allowing large businesses to force smaller operators out of the market.

Walwyn recently warned that the territory needed stronger rules to prevent what he described as big businesses running small ones out of operation, arguing that government intervention was necessary to level the playing field.

However, Rymer used his contribution to the budget debate in the House of Assembly to defend long-established businesses, insisting that many so-called “big” companies are, in fact, local enterprises that have survived decades of economic shocks and continue to contribute to the social and economic fabric of the Virgin Islands.

“Well, Premier, I think it’s important that we pay homage, though, to our local businesses,” Rymer told the House. He said many of these businesses have been operating for generations and represent enduring family legacies within the territory.

Rymer pointed to major local supermarkets such as One Mart, Bobby’s and Supa Valu, noting that, like governments, they have had to endure global disruptions but managed to survive by diversifying their operations. He also referenced businesses such as the Vanterpool group, One Stop Mall, and a range of nail and hair salons, including those operated within the Syrian and Palestinian communities.

“You are a fabric of these Virgin Islands,” Rymer said, singling out companies in areas like Fish Bay, including CTL and the Skelton Group, as well as long-standing small operators such as Panchies and Nito’s.

The minister argued that these businesses continue to keep their doors open, consistently pay staff salaries and make social contributions to the wider community. He also said he has observed new stores opening across the territory, describing the commercial growth as vibrant and dynamic.

“I’ve even seen new stores opening. I feel like I’m in New York … When you pass by, you feel like you’re in Times Square,” he said.

Rymer stressed that the track record of these businesses should not be overlooked when criticisms are made about spending priorities and economic policy. He suggested that the government should carefully consider the credibility and history of those offering advice on how the economy should be managed.

“So, Premier, when you present this kind of budget and you hear people come telling you about spending and priorities, just reflect on the track record a little bit, and see if it’s advice that you should be taking,” Rymer said.
