Sanitation officers lodge complaints about continued improper dumping

The Department of Waste Management has been receiving complaints from its staff that residents continue to improperly dispose of garbage in the British Virgin Islands.

Head of the Department of Waste Management, Neville Allen gave that indication following the recently-concluded cleanup initiative that was held territory-wide.

“I have been getting complaints from sanitation officers about the way persons dispose of garbage and the wrong concept persons have about the duty of these officers,” Allen stated in a government-commissioned media release recently.

“It is the duty of each person to do their part to keep our surroundings clean, and the BVI beautiful,” he argued.

Legislation to penalise irresponsible disposers coming

Minister of Health Carvin Malone confirmed in an interview with BVI News that he too had received reports of persons still disposing of their waste in an irresponsible manner.

He said that legislation is currently being worked on to address the practice.

“We had a very successful bulk collection and storage but there are still folks who very unsatisfactorily continue to place their bulk garbage outside of the bins provided,” Malone stated.

“When we review the regulations and the fees, it will be reflected as punitive measures. We don’t want to obscure anything, we have to stop the behaviour of improper placement or dumping of bulk material and of waste entirely so that we can keep the island as pristine and as beautiful as we need to,” Minister Malone added.

The territory-wide cleanup initiative

The initiative saw 23 special waste bins placed strategically across the territory from December 20 to 28.

It provided persons the opportunity to dispose of bulky waste materials from within their household.

In order for people to truly understand, you have to be serious and set examples. Put up cameras and drop some heavy fines. Better yet, I would be a CI pro bono and survey the area with proof in hand. The thing is, are you going to set examples with the garbage dumpers based on who they know.

What about the derelict vehicles that the Department is refusing and avoiding to address on the road in the community. These vehicles are reducing two lane traffic to one lane traffic. which is an offence!!!

Am from the Islands, but its sad to say the islanders really do contribute to a lot of this unhealthy situation. Am not blaming them for everything but the majority.
When I first came to the BVI in the 80s It was one of the cleanest place I have seen and it aches my heart to see people just littering, also from their vehicles, urinating on the streets, one thing I can say I can never tell anyone I have ever seen a BVI lander urinating on the streets, am not saying they dont but I have never seen it its always the Islanders. Please lets keep this place they have allowed us to live and work as clean as possible leave your bad habits at home.
