Search for new DMV boss ongoing, new VG location found

Minister of Transportation & Works, Kye Rymer.

The process for finding a new Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Commissioner is underway and full-time operations of the department will resume in Virgin Gorda in the coming weeks.

Transportation Minister Kye Rymer told the House of Assembly on Friday that “the Virgin Gorda branch of DMV office location sustained extreme damages and as such a new location has been sourced”.

As for the filling the vacancy for the post of DMV boss which he held for nearly half-a-decade, Rymer said: “The substantive replacement for the position of Commissioner of Motor Vehicles is going through the HR (human resources) process to ensure my successor will be the best fit for the job,” said Rymer, who served at the helm of the DMV before resigning to contest the 2019 General Elections.

He also said the DMV has been receiving an increase in the registration of vehicles since the 2017 disasters and as a result measures are being put in place to properly process the traffic.

“As such, a strategy is being created to ensure that the department is fully equipped with resources to ensure an efficient licensing scheme is run at all times,” Rymer added.

Vastly more old vehicle than new ones being imported

The former DMV boss also cited recent importation statistics to support his proposal for having vehicles older than 10 years banned from entering the territory.

“One of the shipping lines lands in the territory monthly which brought 259 motor vehicles between January and May 2019, of which less than 10 vehicles were newer than 10 years,” the minister said.

He further said: “The reality is that older vehicles impact the environment negatively and does not help in reducing our carbon footprint … These same vehicles quickly become derelicts and we are challenged in disposing of them.”

Minister Rymer served as Commissioner of the DMV from 2014 and resigned in 2018 to enter representational politics.

Bethsaida Smith-Hanley has been acting as DMV Commissioner since December 1, 2018.
