The National Security Council (NSC) has issued an appeal for witnesses to step forward with information about the brutal murder of local lawyer, Jamal Smith, an incident that has shocked and disturbed the community.

Smith was found dead on Tuesday evening, bearing gunshot wounds, after authorities were alerted to an emergency call placed earlier in the week. The investigation revealed that Smith was fatally shot at his home in Manuel Hill on Monday, marking the first homicide in the territory this year.

In response to this grave incident, the NSC held an urgent meeting to discuss the situation, during which Police Commissioner Mark Collins provided an update on the ongoing investigation. The council, addressing the severity of the crime, reiterated its strict stance against criminal activity and called upon the territory’s residents to assist law enforcement in their efforts to solve this case.

The NSC specifically requested that anyone who had been in contact with Smith in the 24 to 48 hours before his death get in touch with Crime Stoppers. They emphasised that calls to the confidential and untraceable hotline numbers — 800-8477[TIPS], 800-847-8477, and 368-9339 —could provide crucial information to aid in the investigation.

As the community grapples with this tragedy, the police have committed to conducting a thorough and swift investigation to ensure the safety and security of all residents. The council has also pledged to introduce necessary measures and legislation to not only seek justice for Smith but also to address all other unresolved crimes.

The National Security Council plays a critical role in overseeing matters of internal security and responding to significant security events within the territory. Its members, including the Governor, the Premier, the Minister for Communications and Works, the Attorney General (ex-officio), and the Commissioner of Police (ex-officio), are united in their determination to combat crime and uphold law and order in the wake of this unsettling crime.

This plea like other before will go unheard. This is a closed community. People know all kinds of things but none will ever come forward.

I wonder if he was going to represent a client for a high profile case. Maybe he was about to win that case and the defendant was scared of jail time.
Or maybe he had just won a case and the other party was very upset.

What is shocking? Is it because it’s Attorney Jamál Smith who is dead? George Burrows was murdered in his home also…was that shocking? Higher Loyalty is needed in the virgin Islands.

What amases me is to see we have a National Security Council , but look, take a good look at the MEMBERS.
Are we so Stupid to just whisk up the special high class people who see nothing, hear nothing, go nowhere and those who even don’t know how to walk on dirt or reach to grass root people. They can’t get any response from the streets because to them the street man has absolutely no value, except when they want information but the who would care to say anything to them.
One other thing, what about stop and search coming back into play. We have enough Police men to do stop and search Island wide same time. For when you do small sections the Culprits call each other we they run into the activity, so they won’t traverse that particular area.

I’m guessing Jamal didnt have camera at his home but as a litigations attorney he most likely would have kept good notes on everything he was working on. Makes me wonder why he didnt have a registered firearm at his home to protect himself from would be attackers. Heck even if it wasnt registered he could be alive today to tell us his story. When we will adjust to our reality.

  9. smh says:

Start at his office. I don’t see a yellow do not cross tape there.

  10. Adjustments needed says:

When will we adjust to reality for real. Sercurity council huddle together after every major crime. Next we see another boldface crime. Waste of time if you aren’t as bold as the criminals.

Adjusting to reality means arming ourselves an legalizing firearms for regular citizens who wish to be safe in their own home & territory. This is the modern world.

Adjusting to reality means getting the m15 m16 NSA/FBI whatever on to spying on any hitman or death squad that enters the territory as a terrorist. This is the modern world not the Stone Age.

Legalize firearms not 5 years later now while we have a chance at security. The only reason our people survived slavery while the native Americans died out under whips was survival of the fittest.

Spirit of a warrior I would not want to go down without a fight we make our people vulnerable without cause.

We need more situations like UPs incident where the robber/killer ends up dead with a mask on his face shameful and gun in hand thanks to civilian action. I don’t usually celebrate death but that seemed very fitting.

Knowing we are unarmed makes the robbers & killers feel invincible.

Slavery & rebellion history is past, give the people the right to self defense.
