Sentencing for former Ports boss moved to January 2024

Former Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority, Oleanvine Maynard.

Former Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA), Oleanvine Pickering Maynard, had her sentencing deferred yesterday and is now expected to know her fate in January, 2024.

The former Ports boss pleaded guilty in June, along with her son, Kadeem Maynard, to being involved in a drug and money laundering scheme that led to the arrest of former Premier Andrew Fahie.

However, Fahie has maintained his innocence ever since his arrest in April, 2022 and remains on a million dollar bond at his daughters’ residence in Florida.

The mother-son duo pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to import cocaine and promised full cooperation with prosecutors in exchange for lenience from the court at sentencing.

Maynard was scheduled to get an indication next Monday, August 21, of the penalty she would face for the offence and whether a mandatory 10-year prison sentence, as proposed by prosecutors, would have been imposed by the court.

However, a notice posted on the court’s docket yesterday stated that Maynard’s sentencing hearing has now been reset for January 18, 2024 in a Miami Division Court before Judge Kathleen Williams.

Maynard’s son, Kadeem, is also expected to have a sentencing hearing scheduled for next Monday but it is unclear if this will also be deferred. His legal team has since filed several documents with the court in advance of that hearing, strongly opposing the proposed 11 to 14-year sentencing guidelines put forward by prosecutors.

The younger Maynard suggested that his extensive cooperation with prosecutors and his guilty plea, among other things, should warrant a much lesser sentence within the range of five to seven years instead, or even possible probation, which could see him avoiding a prison term altogether.

In the meantime, Fahie’s trial is set to begin on January 8, 2024 after a series of delays, largely stemming from the massive trove of evidence prosecutors have had challenges disclosing to Fahie’s defence team.

It is quite astonishing to observe this particular news platform, predominantly consumed by expatriates, displaying a remarkable inclination to withhold the due process rightfully owed to Fahie. Yet, concurrently, it extends a certain leniency, a benefit of doubt if you will, to Donald Trump. Now, some may predicate that these transgressions do not rest on equal footing, and I am inclined to concur. Undoubtedly, Trump’s actions assume a markedly more ominous demeanor.”

Truth. Now use that same logic and reasoning to apply to those being investigated by the COI. Were those people guilty AF? Yup. and we all knew it. Same applies for coach, mom and son.

  23. US says:

Do you know anything about the US court system and what happens to Black people who commit crimes? Accused drug dealers? Drug dealers who are not US citizens but conspiring to sell drugs in the US? Time served will not be an option. Remember Noriega? They went into his company and snatched him out. This is not a Netflix movie yet.
