Shift system for ESHS senior students back on from today

Dr Natalio Wheatley

Following last week’s unexpected deferral of the planned roll-out of a new shift system for senior students at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), Education Minister Dr Natalio Wheatley has announced that the shift system is now back on starting today.

“I am now pleased to announce that having engaged with the relevant stakeholders, we are now ready to implement the planned shift system to have all senior students attending classes five days a week with effect from Monday, May 10, 2021.” Dr Wheatley said in a statement issued last Thursday.

Students were previously divided into groups separated by shifts for scheduling purposes. The morning shift would begin at 8:40 am and end at 11:55 am for students in the groups 10A, 11A and 12A

The afternoon shift for students in Group B would begin at 12:40 p.m. and end at 3:55 p.m.

Dr Wheatley said transportation will be provided for students to move between campuses to attend technical/lab classes.

Last Sunday, May 2 the rollout was postponed abruptly on the eve of students returning to school without explanation.

In a subsequent interview with our news centre, Dr Wheatley said the postponement was because of “concerns” that were raised.

He explained: “There have been some concerns that have come to my attention and I would like for the Education Advisory Board and other stakeholders to have an opportunity to investigate and consider these concerns before moving forward.”

The Minister then apologised for the inconvenience and asked for the indulgence of all parties as “we (the ministry) make sure we get this absolutely right”.

Additional measures being considered

Commenting on the concerns expressed by some parents about the expected reduction in instructional time spent with teachers, Dr Wheatley said additional measures are being considered to help support the students.

He continued: “I also wish to reiterate that students will continue to do practice exercises, homework and other activities when they are not attending face to face sessions. The use of our Google classrooms and other online platforms will continue as teachers will supplement their contact sessions using the platform.”

I don’t care who is in charge. Half of the children these days do not want to go to school and they don’t want to work hard. Ask the school how many of those lazy and rude boys have to stay home because of their rebellious behavior….Some parents choose not to discipline their children and allow them to do as they please and they become a menace to the children who actually want to learn and also a menace to society, cause it’s the same ignorant ones who will evolve into criminals and come to rob you for your own hard earned things

Every country in the world have kids/youth who fall through the cracks because of social, behavioral, academic issues so cut the bullshit. The Minister is a failure, point blank, simple and he needs to go. Nobody is blaming him for anything except for the fact that he is NOT a leader and it shows every time he has to make a decision. From last year they knew full well they had no plan to get school opened and as any real leader would, he should have simply said we will remain under the hybrid system (mix of in-person and online) until September 2021. How hard is that? At least people could plan and know how to deal with things.

Well well well. Had to resort to the same shift system that he had all kinds of things to say about. What did the mother pig say to the baby pig again? It should have been done a long time ago but because it was the past government that started the system you all tried to run away from it.

I have always consider Myron a human with a good heart. How could I possibly call a local born like myself those disgusting names. All I can say is you never truly miss the water until the well runs dry. We are in crisis here with the school system. The same people that was calling down Myron now needs his help but they are to stubborn to admit or ask for his help.

        • @@joseph says:

Myron is a good man and he was a good representative for the people. Those guys gang up on him because he was becoming real strong because people liked him. They bad mouth him and spread a lot of lies and the same people who he helped believe the lies. Lies can kill and destroy in the BVI. Now look what we have in government. A set of people who can’t do nothing.

  4. Sick and Tired says:

All the monies need to stop being wasted, leave thing as they are and put people with good ideas in place to come up with full contingency plans for September.

Further, fhere is absolutely nothing wrong with including all capable minds on this, they are all our people. It is the division among us that keeps slumbeing.

Put egos and party politics aside and begin working for country and people.

Just so sick and tired of being sick and tired of seeing no progress being made in our country, yet millions are being spent daily in thin air.

He got a chance and now he is biggest disappointment in history of politics. The man cannot get anything move. Talk don’t don’t do work Sowande. Education has gone to the dogs since you took it over. I am sorry for our students.

  7. ??? says:

Do these People in charge of the Education Department communicate internal and relate correct info externally. They can’t be having parents juggling at the last minute to meet Education Guideline. This is ridiculous! Unfortunately, From Minister, Permanent Secretary to Departmental Head, The Portfolio needs to be revisted and changes to those at the top is needed.

It’s the Government that you all wanted- “the common man” you all said. Well, enjoy the common man now

  9. Hmm says:

I don’t know which is worst the way Kedrick handled agriculture or the way this guy is handling Education.

He is the epitome that some people can criticize well and advocate with marches etc. However when given a chance to handle things they do worst than who they criticize.
