Skelton pleads with Governor “give the gov’t more time”

Leader of the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement, Ronnie Skelton,

Opposition Leader Ronnie Skelton has called for the Governor to hold off on seeking additional powers over the territory and give the government more time to implement the good governance reforms requested by the UK.

Skelton has disagreed with many decisions made by the government, but at a press conference yesterday, he stated his support for the government’s stance that giving the Governor additional powers will not help the BVI.

“I’m pleading and asking the Governor to not take the step that he says he wants to take. Give them (the government) until November to get the majority of these things implemented. I know we’re in a difficult situation because two years have elapsed since the COI report and the unrealistic dates the government gave. I don’t think they had the experience and knowledge of how the system works,” Skelton said.

While pleading with Governor John Rankin, Skelton said there is an evident need for more resources to be made available to the implementation process as the government also has a duty to execute its day-to-day functions.

Skelton also said he is set to have a meeting with Governor Rankin soon, adding that he will plead for the government to get more time to work on the reforms. And he said if the government is granted more time, the Wheatley administration will have to “involve the Opposition because it’s not just about them anymore, it’s about the country. It’s about this generation and future generations because once the British take stuff, they don’t give it back to you and that’s a known fact.”

Governor Rankin has revealed that the elected government was initially held to a deadline of May 2024 to make significant progress on the good governance reforms. But he said they now have until November 2024 to show progress.

At the same time, the Governor said he will be exploring how he can use additional powers to implement some of the changes that the elected government hasn’t actioned to date.

The governor needs to given them an ultimatum; form a unity government or he gets more power.

Why unite with an incompetent bunch. If they cannot do the job, they need to get out and leave it with the experts in the opposition who can. It only takes one from the government side to cross over. Sowande is the mouthpiece. His incompetent team have left all the burden on him. None of his VIP members are a help to him. I hope Sowande can see what is going on.

But all of his government sat with him at his press conference so they are in agreement with his incompetence and not interested in what is good for the country.

It was Skelton who led the charge against accepting the UK $400m loan guarantee after Irma, because the supervision conditions were too burdensome.

We can see how good that decision was by looking around.
