Smith being attacked because she is a woman — Rosan
Political commentator Cindy Rosan has posited that government minister Lorna Smith is heavily criticised for her decisions, simply because she is a woman.
Speaking on Tola Radio recently, Rosan said critics ignore the actions of numerous male elected leaders who have been in politics for years but are quick to attack Minister Smith simply because of her gender.
“How is it that we’re so comfortable to constantly go down the throat of one woman? You have a bunch of representatives that have been in the House for years and if this one woman (Smith) steps in any direction, she becomes the absolute enemy of the territory,” Cindy stated.
Rosan also said she is constantly attacked for supporting Minister Smith but not when she supports any other elected representative.
“When it comes to me, don’t tell me who to support because nobody says anything when I support Myron [Walwyn]. It doesn’t matter what she (Lorna) would have done with this Trade Commission, y’all would have been down her a**. Get over it! She’s a woman, she’s in there and you all can do nothing about it,” Rosan argued emphatically.
On October 31, Smith, the Minister for Financial Services, Labour, and Trade, tabled legislation in the House of Assembly that suspended the Trade Commission. The move has triggered much criticism and debate in society as residents argue the advantages and disadvantages of Minister Smith’s decision.
Smith was also the source of much criticism earlier this year when she made the bold move to partner with the VIP party, giving them the one member they needed to form the government after the April general election.
Many have said Smith’s move disappointed them, as she initially represented the hope residents had for a new and better era in Virgin Islands politics.
Still, Smith has stood by her unpopular decisions, maintaining that she has made every decision in the interest of the people and will continue to work in their interest.

What you need to do is check to see what Hon. Smith is doing before you give her her crown.
She wants full control, but if you ask me she can use some help. Why I say that? I visited a Fruit Stand the other day and there was a Fillipino working there. Now she was bragging that there were over four hundred work permits handed out since she got into power. What I hope is that they didn’t need to bring someone from across the Pacific to peddle yams and your special Ms. Lorna rubber stamped it. Cretainly they could have found someone already here to do that, but maybe she was.
I say this to say when your focus is on country, you do not focus on clearing your desk and signing off on everything there, especially work permits. Has there ever been a work permit refused? I wonder what are the protocols. Is it just that you have to fill your form out properly or is there a way to do background checks on some of these applicants? Well, the first thing you have to do is try and sit down when you enter a new job and research and review processes and make principled decisions as to what you can change and do better. In Labour better is needed as every clerk, every sales person, every construction worker, every damn worker does not have to come from overseas. Has the process of inviting persons who are unemployed or under employed to register their names at Labour been cancelled?
Certainly it cannot be with children graduating from High School and College in the Summer months that there are no candidates, no persons interested that one can choose from.
And if you never thought about it, somebody needs to have businesses, as a prerequisite for their trade licence annual renewal to send in a current list of their workers because many of the persons on labour permits are double and triple dipping. Certainly that is illegal, Hon. Smith.
Also have your Labour workers pay surprise visit to businesses to ensure that they are operating within the law. Jane is working for John, but Paul holds her work permit. This is a small Territory. There is lots of work to do. May we all use our energy to make this beautiful Territory a better place for everyone working and living here.
