Smith wants ‘hall of fame’ created to honour contributions of local athletes

Government legislator Neville ‘Sheep’ Smith as he is being sworn into the House of Assembly.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly Neville Smith is advocating for a hall of fame for local athletes.

Smith’s remarks were made while he gave his contribution at the recent sitting of the House of Assembly.

The first-term legislator’s comment comes after he and another local athlete were recently honoured in St Croix in the United States Virgin Islands for their contribution to softball.

He said: “We were welcomed with open arms — in St Croix, not in Tortola.”

He continued: “I would like to encourage them to keep up the good work, and we need to take a page out of that book. We also need to think of creating a hall of fame in the Virgin Islands for all athletes.”

Change our mindset

In the meantime, Smith said it was time for a change of mindset in the British Virgin Islands.

He said: “We have to start thinking positively and show the people that they mean something to us. Those are the kinds of things we need to come in here and talk about and putting things in place and structures in place.”

Additionally, he urged his colleagues to create a budget that is one that is more than to pay bills.

“We have to touch the people’s lives; we have to,” he insisted.

The British Virgin Islands has been making noteworthy waves in the international sporting arena in recent times.

Within the last months and as recent as August, local athletes such as Chantel Malone and Kyron McMaster earned gold medals in their respective athletic disciplines. Those two athletes are also participants in this year’s World Championships.

Perhaps a better suggestion would be to remove all the legislator pictures from the house of assembly and create the hall of fame right there….after all our athletes are representing our territory much better than all of our legislators.

  3. Great Idea, US says:

The local athletes is not being treated in the manner that they should. When the big companies in the US start offering them endorsement deals ie… Nike, Underarmour, Sports drinks,Cereals ETC, then maybe the BVI will take heed. You have good athlethes comming out of the BVI.

This is why we need to stop voting for people simply because we like them but rather for to vote for those who have to ability to make a real impact. Sheep is very down to earth guy but is an extremely weak legislator.

Instead of waiting on a building, do a Walk of Fame by doing them on the sidewalks around the stadiums similar to the Walk of Fame close to the Famous Chinese Theater at Hollywood in LA California. The sidewalks here have to be built properly though.
