Soca Cruise ‘out of character’ for quiet BVI — Christian Council
The BVI Christian Council (BVICC) has formally objected to the government’s sponsorship of the Uber Soca Cruise event scheduled for today, November 18.
The group described the event as “out of character” for the BVI while noting that it undermines the Christian values of the territory.
In a statement dated November 17, the Council said it had previously raised concerns about entertainment events supported by the government, noting that it had “made a commitment to provide a stronger and more consistent voice on matters that could negatively affect the well-being of our territory”.
The Council said it recognised positive initiatives such as the National Security Council’s Anti-Crime Summit, but expressed disappointment that “some activities sponsored by the Government of the Virgin Islands continue to erode the Christian values of the BVI”.
The BVICC objected specifically to the government-sponsored UberSoca Punk Rock J’ouvert Cruise. The Council listed several planned elements of the event, including “closure of Main Street”, “live revelling in the streets of Road Town”, “performances behind the Administration Complex”, and “promotion of Soca artistes from the region”.
It also cited the “budget allocation of $500,000”, along with concerns about reduced productivity in the public service, impacts on the education system, and limited healthcare capacity during large gatherings.
The Council said national events of this scale “are out of character for our quiet community, and threaten the peaceful environment that residents expect”. It further warned that large crowds can lead to “littering, public intoxication, and other nuisances”.
While acknowledging that it may be too late to halt the planned activities, the BVICC urged Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley to consider the event’s potential effects on young people and wider society. The statement added, “this event cannot be considered cultural or compatible with the Christian beliefs that our territory strives to protect”.
Dr Wheatley has received intense criticism from some quarters for appearing as a ‘party Premier’, focusing on entertainment events to the detriment of more pressing national priorities.
The Council stressed that it remained committed to being the “watchdog of our nation and the conscience of our community” and encouraged residents to stand firm in protecting moral principles for future generations.

Whilst I agree with the Christian Council’s statement in general, Christianity’s horror of the nakedness has led to social media censoring the God given beauty of the nude.
We need to differentiate between the lewd and the nude.
People who still believe that religion is a God created phenomenon must soon realize that christianity is a fading indoctrunation, of which is continuing to lose its grasp on man, his thinking and forward propulsion into the future.
On the contrary, Religion and christianity are not creations of God, but of man. Therefore, to suggest otherwise is folly.
Religion has a place in individual moral and spiritual lives. It should serve to enhance the personal and spiritual development of who believes in it, but it should have no standing control on how a country is run.

These folks only have energy for music artists and parties. It’s the only time they resurrect. For drugs, shootings, corruption, prostitution, neglect, abuse its crickets. Vybz Cartel, Alkaline, and now Uber cruise they pop up like a wack-a-mole.
