Some leaked advance poll results true, investigation launched

An investigation has been officially launched into the reported leak of the results from Advance Polling Day on February 21.

The investigation was opened after authorities discovered that some of what was leaked on local social media was the same as the actual advance poll results.

This is according to a preliminary report from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association British Islands and Mediterranean Region (CPA BIMR) which deployed a team of international officials to ‘observe’ the BVI’s 2019 General Elections.

“One published report (leaked result) reflected a district result. As such, the integrity of the electoral process has been undermined,” the observers from the CPA BIMR said in its preliminary findings on Wednesday, February 27.

“If originating from agents and/or candidates, this (the leak) demonstrates a breaking of their oath as set out in the election law and Form 32 … an investigation is underway to determine the source of this breach,” said Felicity Herrmann, an official with the CPA BIMR who was invited to observe the elections by Governor Augustus Jaspert.

Herrmann said the CPA BIMR is not directly involved in the investigation.

“We understand that the Supervisor of the Elections and her office are looking into what happened and where that [leaked information] came from,” she added while answering questions from local media on Wednesday.

Advance polling was held to accommodate police and election officers who were assigned to work on Election Day (February 25), persons on remand, those travelling on Election Day, the elderly, as well as persons who are illiterate or those who require assistance to cast their votes.

A total 1,120 ballots were cast during advance polling. This number represents 7.44 percent of 15,038 total registered voters. This was an increase of 234 votes from the 2015 election, said the CPA BIMR which had also observed the territory’s 2015 General Elections.

For your information, I heard about the leak on Friday after advance polling. It is said that the leak was in the seventh & eight districts and possibly the third.

The UK is not trying to undermine the territory, they have their own sets of problems to deal with.

  3. Thank you says:

This breach must be vigorously dealt with. For years, there’s always a drippy mouth in key positions and I hope that the culprit is identified and imprisoned.

I hope the recommendation suggested that its time for the head of this department to be replaced as well.

are so stupid. Don’t they know not to use technology when doing wrong?

Anyway, the good book (the Bible) says what goes on in the dark will be revealed. Can’t dispute this. So whether or not technology is used, what goes on in the dark will always be revealed – sooner or later.

It was probably just a lucky guess by one of the Candidates Agents. They were there from beginning to end recording every single person who voted and they obviously know their supporters and nonsupporters, hence the figures they predicted appeared to be accurate. No leak here in my opinion.

  10. My Observations says:

Hope the observers also recommended a numbering system (take a number) for persons when they reach some of the larger polling stations. Persons who should have known better were blatantly jumping the line and this was very unfair to voters who had to stand for hours waiting their turn.

And while they are at it, there were quite a few seniors/disabled persons coming to vote and going to the head of the line and slowing down the process. Causes one to wonder why they may not have voted in the Advanced Polling on Thursday last.

Addressing these (and any other) issues will enhance the process even more.

The persons worked at those stations should not be used again. Simple, they broke their oath.

See, as an honest trustworthy individual, I responded to their ad for persons to work in the Elections Office for the recently concluded Election. I submitted my application well in advance and they did not have the decency to offer a reply, now see here. I would never have been caught in such a scandal. I suppose they hired friends and family.
