Some prisoners captured – Police Commissioner

Police Commissioner Michael Matthews.

Commissioner of Police, Michael Matthews, has revealed that some of the prisoners who broke out of Her Majesty’s Prison, Balsam Ghut, during the hurricane have been captured.

The Commissioner did not list the number of escapees nabbed or their names.

“Yes we’ve had escaped prisoners, but we’ve also captured some,” he said while speaking on JTV News.

There are reports in the international press that roughly 120 prisoners escaped during the passage of Hurricane Irma.

However, local officials have not confirmed the number.

Meanwhile, Communications Minister, Mark Vanterpool said he was told that the inmates escaped after a section of the prison suffered damage.

“After the hurricane, the prison roof went and everything went, and the prisoners – I am not sure how they escaped – but they got out and the police are dealing with that right now,” he said.
