Speaker opens HOA to local schools

All local schools will now have the opportunity to attend sittings of the House of Assembly as part of an education initiative being led by Speaker of the House, Julian Willock.

Willock made the announcement in his opening remarks at last week’s June 3 sitting of House where some 20 students from of the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School were the first batch of students to attend a parliamentary proceeding under the initiative.

“The Office of the Speaker has reached out to all the schools including private schools whereby each sitting will have a class present in our ongoing effort to educate not only school children but the public about the proceedings and the legislative branch of government,” the Speaker said.

The Ministry of Education will be formulating a schedule for other schools to participate in the activity for the upcoming 2019/2020 academic.

Responding to the news, Acting Chief Education Officer Connie George said she welcomed the proposal.

“We are always willing to partner with other government departments that show interest in strengthening our students’ learning process in the classroom,” she said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Premier Kye Rymer said he believes the initiative will help shape students to become future legislators.

“I look forward to welcoming more schools to the House. It is a very high possibility that this initiative will help to groom some of our young people in becoming members of this honourable body,” the Deputy Premier said.
