The government is seeking a new Chairman of the Social Security Board (SSB).

The post was advertised on the government’s official website following talks that the current Chairman Ian Smith would no longer be serving in the post.

Opposition Leader Marlon Penn mentioned rumours of Smith’s departure recently while the House of Assembly was debating whether to appoint Jeanette Scatliffe-Boynes as the permanent Director of the SSB.

The government did not confirm or deny the aforesaid rumours at the time.

Meanwhile, the circumstances under which Smith is leaving the post is not immediately clear.

As for the potential new holder of the SSB chairmanship, the government said they are now accepting applications from interested and qualified persons to fill the position.

A full description of the requirements for the position of chairperson can be found on the government’s website. Letters of interest along with the applicant’s curriculum vitae should be emailed to the Ministry of Natural Resources, Labour & Immigration at [email protected].

The deadline to submit completed applications is Tuesday, September 21.

The publication of the vacancy and the whole process of appointing a chairman are mere formalities. These type of positions are always filled by a staunch party supporter, qualified or not, who will act as a puppet for the government. This will ensure that the government has full and uncontested access to one of their favourite piggy banks. Sadly, cronyism will continue to keep us moving in circles. Our governments are the architect of our indebtedness and lack of real progress. Covid-19 just compounded their incompetence but next election cycle, Covid-19 will become the scapegoat for all unfulfilled elections promises. We have to demand better for our hard earned tax dollar. Puppets and string pullers must go. Only when governments realize that we the people have NO party loyalty, will we get honest, ethical, impartial and hardworking governments and public servants.

That place and NHI need a big shakeup, victimization of claimants, unprofessionslism and vindictiveness is the norm.

Let’s hope Honourable Wheatley and the Premier don’t appoint the Deputy Chair as Chairman… It’s disgusting to way the VIP elected most of their supporters to the same Stat. Boards.
