Strong action needed on crime – Walwyn

Sixth District Representative, Myron Walwyn.

The government must take more decisive action to combat the recent spate of escalating crime.

That was the view shared by Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn when members of the opposition spoke to the media recently.

Over the last few months, there have been a number of daring daylight robberies, shootings, burglaries and a number of other firearm-related incidents. There was also an audacious ambush carried out on the HM Prison van as it ferried an inmate to the High Court. This resulted in injuries to a prison guard.

Walwyn argued that the increase in criminal activity seen recently creates even more difficulties for an already struggling tourism economy and for the peaceful enjoyment of those who live here.

“Criminal activity is a barrier to the socio-economic growth of the community,” Walwyn shared. “It discourages investment, both domestic and foreign. If allowed to continue, it would be a major factor of lack of socio-economic development.”

He continued: “Strong action must be taken by the government to effectively tackle criminal activity, and it must be taken now. Whatever resources that are needed by law enforcement must be deployed, because as a country, we have too much at stake.”

Walwyn also urged the government to revisit its economic plans and policies to see if the lack of stimulation of the local economy may somehow be a contributor to the wave of certain types of criminal activities, such as burglaries.

Meanwhile, Governor John Rankin, who holds responsibility for the territory’s security, said he will continue to do all that he can to ensure that the territory is safe.

He further noted that, following a discussion in the National Security Council (NSC), police have increased their patrols and expressed that the NSC continues to support the police in using every available tool to bring persons to justice.

    • What a pity says:

The Opposition and Government are fighting each other still over crime when the failure is the person who the subject of security falls under which is the Governor. Both sides seem afraid to call him out as everything under his responsibility is failing.

Get UK police in on a 6 month rotation like the Dutch do. then there will be no favoritism, and the will not be scared of repercussions. Local police are scared to cal out criminals, there is no law and order.

IS THIS REALLY THE GOVERNMENT JOB?..
WHY DO YOU HAVE A POLICE,CUSTOMS,IMMIGRATION AND PRISON DEPARTMENTS? They all need to be proactive and step up their game now.
The Virgin Islands community also needs to stop being complacent and dismissive when it comes to criminal activity in the Territory

  12. @UKM says:

None sense! The UK officials are no more competent than our own. You are ranting from a racist perspective and not a rational thoughtful informed one…

The antidote for crime reducing and reduction is jobs, jobs and jobs.

Therefore, bring in some jobs, and some big jobs investments from the UK, and disperse them throughout the system and country.

In that way, the UK will be contributing positively to the growth while assisting to reduce crime of the territory. That will be the most effective way to reduce and eliminate crime rises.

But the notion of casting aside the current minds for some of the UK is simply racist thinking and serves no obvious to fix the problem or relieve country..

  13. @ Resident says:

The territory has sufficient manpower, skills and intellect here to carry all police work. It does not another UK force with any special scheduling to come here to do what the personnel here are capable of doing.

Further, some will argue that seeing the problem of crime solving through colonialist eyes can be considered racist, imperialist, neocolonialist and anti VI. people.

Those are the systems that are now antiquated and which most of the world’s population are fighting to get rid of. So, perhaps one should enjoy one’s retirement and stay out of VI. politics./business.
