After months of preparation and more than a year of no action at the Ellis Thomas Downs on Tortola, horseracing successfully returned to the British Virgin Islands on Boxing Day.

In usual fashion, the BVI went head-to-head against horseracing aficionados from the neighbouring US Virgin Islands (USVI).

The return of the sport, however, saw the BVI largely collecting a flogging from their USVI counterparts who won three of the five races featured on Wednesday.

GUS IS TUFF, a racehorse representing No Nonsense Racing Stables in St Thomas, showed off its toughness by finishing ahead of three other horses in a time of 1:34:2 over seven furlongs.

MY SONG VENEZUELA finished in second while the BVI’s ‘QUEEN GRACE’ and UNCLE MACE finished their debut race in third and fourth places, respectively.

HAYLEY’S HERE of 7A’s Racing Stables in St Thomas took victory in a time of 1:32:3 during race number-two — also a seven-furlong event. SAILOR’s REPRESENTATIVE — the only BVI competitor in that race — finished in fourth.

Top Priority Stables show promise

The next seven-furlong race saw NADIAES IMAGE of Top Priority Racing Stables in the BVI winning its debut race in 1:33:1.

Race number four then saw the fleet-footed LUNCH BREAK — also of Top Priority Racing Stables — winning in an impressive 1:31:4.

The final race of the evening happened over six-and-a-half furlongs — the shortest distance of the day. The seasoned TOTALLY EVIL of Alliance Point Racing in St Thomas took victory in a time of 1:22:2.

Below are highlights of Wednesday’s Boxing Day races.

The 5th district candidate should encourage his mother in law to give back the horse racing gate that was donated to the horse owners

The 5th District Candidate will always be in her shadows. I wonder what he thinks about the situation being a horse racing fan himself. He don’t dare go against her silly acts, but still he wants to represent the people and be their voice. Let’s hear your thoughts on this hard issue young man! You for mom or the people of the BVI?

That question should be answered by the president of the horse owners association. Another question for him is: why did you get the gate from St. Thomas when there is a gate here? And to all the other imps who are trying to get Kye caught up in this nonsense stop wasting your time. We don’t want to hear it.

  5. Blah Blah Blah says:

Keep Kye Rymer name out of you all pot. Is this how you all plan on winning an election by trying to make people believe that Kye is controlled by P****? Come better than that….
