Summer classes, credit recovery programme for students who failed to graduate

Dr Natalio Wheatley

Students who were unsuccessful in graduating from secondary schools this year now have an immediate second chance at earning their diploma.

“For those students who failed the exit proficiency exam, there will be summer classes beginning on July 2 and there will be summer sitting of the exam on July 26,” Education Minister Dr Natalio Wheatley announced at this year’s graduation ceremony for Elmore Stoutt High School.

He added: “For those students who failed two or less subjects, they will be able to achieve their high school diploma through our credit recovery programme. Those students who failed two or more subjects will be able to achieve their high school diploma through the newly established online diploma programme, with exams twice a year,” Dr Wheatley said.

Dr Wheatley is asking all students who fit into either of the aforementioned categories to contact their school principal or the ministry’s exams officer.

Just recently, the minister held a community meeting with education officials and parents to discuss the ‘additional year’ in secondary schools. A number of other issues were discussed including facilitating slower-learning students.

Failing two or less subjects! What kind of educational methods do they need? I can’t see why children cannot study to pass at least maths and English otherwise this is a sad situation indeed. Where are their parents? These children need help as that is too low to get a proper office job unless they try for the trade and enter into VISTS (technical school)
