Tailored teaching methods coming for every child

Dr Wheatley

The British Virgin Islands will soon implement teaching methods tailored to suit every child, Education Minister Dr Natalio Wheatley has said.

The former educator made the remarks at the start of Education Week 2019.

“The ability of each child is being considered and the Ministry of Education is planning with them in mind,” Dr Wheatley said.

“It is time for differentiated teaching and learning to be utilised to reach every child in our care.”

Meanwhile, the Education Minister also called on students to play their part towards their own education.

“In order to achieve excellence, students have to practice good habits of attending school regularly, review notes, complete assignments and keep up with teachers in each subject by reading ahead, ” he said.

“We all have power and potential to change our prescribed futures.”

The theme for this year’s Education Week is ‘Be Disciplined, Achieve Excellence’.

The week kicked off with an opening ceremony and Talent Extravaganza at the H Lavity Stoutt Community College in Paraquita Bay.

On Tuesday, primary and secondary schools had a teacher exchange.

On Wednesday, students participated in the Inter-primary School Sports (Division B) at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds followed by the Inter-Secondary Schools’ Debate Finals at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School.

The week of activities continues on Thursday where the Inter-Primary School Sports (Division A) will meet at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.

The week will culminate on Friday, March 15 with an open house at all schools.

Off to a good start, this was long overdue. Please don’t just scrap all the things the past Minister did. Keep the things that work, tweak the ones that don’t work.

I spoke with a teacher who was considering leaving the profession. She said that government keep changing things and then don’t give it time to work before changing it again. It means they can never make meaningful progress. When you make changes. Give a reasonable time for adjustment and results.

We have already gone through “Differentiated Teaching” training and numerous workshops relative thereto.

What is needed is now teaching time beyond 40 minute period and lots of resources, resources, resources, and not a review of past training.
