Talks underway with police to enforce water vending policy in Road Town

Google image

Talks are ongoing with the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force to potentially put measures in place to enforce a seven-year-old policy requiring vendors to seek permission to sell water in the capital city of Road Town.

This is according to City Manager Janice Brathwaite Edwards who said selling bottles of water on the roadways of Road Town is creating unnecessary traffic congestions for motorists who traverse the area.

Brathwaite-Edwards said a one-off water-selling charity event is usually of no harm. But, as of recently, persons have been selling water on the roadways daily.

She said persons selling water cause a build-up of heavy traffic while trying to win a sale. She said this also creates a hazardous environment for unsuspecting motorists.

Presently, water is the only item that permission must be sought to sell since, according to the city manager, other items sold in Road Town are done so at an acceptable distance from the roads.

She said although the policy requiring water salespersons to seek permission from her office has been in existence for nearly a decade now, certain persons have “conveniently” forgotten about it to reap personal gains.

No penalty currently exists for persons caught selling water without permission.

The Office of the City Manager posted a bulletin on the government’s official website on Tuesday warning that persons caught selling water without permission will be asked to vacate the area which the sale is taking place.

What they need to do is sell the water from illegal uninsured noise nuisance motorcycles because then the police will totally ignore them.

  2. FedEx says:

We make every little thing a issue here in the BVI. I understand there rules to follow but some of them you see out there are just trying to raise money to go on their trip to represent the BVI. The others I see are raising funds to participate in the Easter Festival. Most of them are just a one off situation. These kind of things lead ppl to thief if you gonna ask them to vacate the area.

I totally agree with your view. This is really a dumb and selfish idea by the Town Manager. Can’t she focus on cleaning up that area by the market that has all types of vendors or sellers. Get the market presentable and enforce the utilization of such. She needs to get this petty idea out of her head and face the bigger Issues.I don’t understand the Purpose of a Town manager anyhow.

While i think its great that young people are raising funds selling water it is also dangerous. Just this week i saw a car suddenly stop on Waterfront Drive to get a bottle and the car behind had to stop suddenly and they just touched, luckily with no damage. Could lead to a bigger accident.

When people have a title with nothing of substance to do, this is what they do. WTF? Really? Go clean up the f*****g market square and festival grounds from harassing young people who are doing something positive. These people should seek permission to sell a few bottles of water as fundraising but the people in the market square block up the entire driveway, have old broken down tent structures that look so nasty and running down the place as they feel, no problem?

The whole town is in a state of chaos. Yes, there need to be controls on selling water along the road, but don’t overlook all the food vans – do they have sanitary facilities? Also, can the City Manager also stop these clothes stores from putting their displays outside, making the place look like a tacky bazaar? We need a holistic approach to law and order in Road Town. Start with the main problems and then tackle the smaller ones.

How about all the car wash stations that take up valuable parking spaces. Which also causes traffic and parking issues.

The Dr**on lady need to first work on a propasal to enforse a clean up of nasty shanty/ghetto Road Town. And they out here trying to find ways to lure the Tourist in. Who want to spend money to come to such a nasty looking place. Road Town looks like a dirty ghetto.

  14. Me says:

This is not and should be forced on the police. If missy can’t figure out how to do the job she was hired to do,then step the H*ll down. Seems like she has no expérience and it is time to clean out your desk. Something as easy as comming up with a way to handle the problem she can’t figure out. Well, like they say, only in dunce Tortola.

  16. Enough says:

If they are going to enforce water vending; then they must enforce all vending in Government spaces. Start with the Market how many of them have trade licenses and how many of them were given permission. Also the people that wash cars all over Road Town. The people selling at the Sunday Morning Well etc. Why would she only single out water vendors when so many do this and these are worst that once a week water vending the others do it everyday.

  17. Bias, bias, bias, says:

When your family member was raising funds a couple of years ago it ‘Go Team Ja—–” but now the other children must stop selling til they get permission. Biased and need to go siddung ….

  18. As Usual says:

The main problem is being overlooked and the minor one being blown out of proportion.
Road Town has traffic problems…deal with finding solutions to that…it’s not caused by people selling water…it’s because the traffic backs up why they are able to sell the water. ..selling the water is not the cause of the backup.
What a poor excuse for failure to see the big picture, or have the integrity to tackle the real issue.

  19. CW says:

STRUPES ARGUE OVER BOTTLES OF WATER WHILE THE TERRITORY HAS SO MUCH RECOVERY TO DO. PICK YOUR BATTLES AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BE TOUGH ON YOUR COMPUTER. YOU WILL ALL WISH YOU HAD DONE SOMETHING BESIDES WHINE COME NEXT HURRICANE SO BE A DIFFERENCE. MAKE A DIFFERENCE. STOP WASTING TIME BEING STRUPES!!!!!!!!!!!

    STRUPES !!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Disgusted says:

Can we fix the issues with food being sold in unsanitary places, including a particular supermarket where rats play hand games among the groceries, and the sewage backup? Provide structure for the young people, if what they are doing is costing a problem, redirect them rather than blasting them. Then we complain about crime. Smh.
