Teacher sentenced after flogging 2yo for poo

A daycare teacher who reportedly inflicted 11 lashes on a two-year-old infant for soiling the school’s bathroom walls with faeces was slapped with a fine and a suspended sentence on Wednesday.

Magistrate Shawn Innocent ordered 52-year-old Jamaican Sharon Salmon to pay $500 in one month or, in default, serve 30 days at Her Majesty’s Prison.

She was additionally given a three-month prison sentence which was suspended for one year.

That means she will only serve three months behind bars if she commits another offence within the next year.

The court heard that on November 6, 2016, she took the child to the bathroom after suspecting that he needed a diaper change.

During the cleaning process, Salmon realized that she did not bring baby wipes so she left the child unattended to retrieve some from another room.

Upon her return, she saw the toddler holding the soiled diaper and saw faeces smeared on the bathroom walls.

The court heard that she used an unknown object to inflict the blows to the child’s thighs and buttocks.

Sometime after, the mother of the toddler took the child to seek medical attention and later reported the incident to the school and police.

Salmon who is still a teacher at the school, was subsequently charged.

It is not unusual for a two year old baby to do something like that. Maybe the baby did not get change and was uncomfortable in the dirty diaper. If that was my child, I would have been the next female on lock down up the hill for you know what. H*ll I would have stepped into that prison Smizeing. You do something like that to my two year old baby, I will turn into a vicious female lion. That lady needs to be investigated, she beat up a two year old baby, you figure the rest.

I would assume that your children didn’t go through their “discovery” stage and that you along with your children are always clear, precise and perfect in your actions. That child is two years old and I am very certain that he did not expect his 52 year old caretaker who SHOULD be experienced enough to realize who she was dealing with, to deal with him in this manner.

What makes me more upset is that she still remains a teacher at this school. Well leh me tell ayo, whether her mother dead or not she and her mother woulda feel my share of blows. H**l woulda refuse me when I done with her @$$

      I do beg your pardon.
You of course are the expert on these things am sure because your 2 year old can speak perfect English and is fully potty trained at 2. And fully trained to imitate a grown adult at 2. I don’t see a mental health professional in your child’s future at all.

      We congratulate you.

For the rest of us we know that developmentally 2 year olds are still babies and learning and will be taught accordingly. It is egregious to me that she beat! Not hit – she beat that baby as if the baby was a grown man because of her own ineffective child care procedures – who leaves a 2 year old unattended in ANY situation much less a bathroom where the child can drown in the toliet, swallow unattended bathroom cleaning products or any other number of things that can happen in a bathroom – no instead of dealing with the situation the way a TRAINED child care professional would have been taught to do including the appropriate lesson to be taught to the child you beat the child for your own failings.

Had it been my child we would be in a different court and as for the daycare, you are asking to be sued because this not going be the only incident involving this woman.

Further to that if I was another parent with a child there, our relationship would come to a grinding haunt!

You SMh. You out of order. Check yourself. The child had to go the doctor for godsakes, that’s not normal for a normal spanking.

When my first was two he didn’t like to keep soiled pampers on. If you didn’t change him right aftr he took it off and dropped it or for some god on known reason would throw it. Once he I saw him in the corner and knew what that meant went to get the supplies as i was making my way towards him the pamper flew in the kitchen and he ran in the room to the area where we kept the wipes. So no the children aren’t nasty and if you had kids you would know at that age its explore discover and plenty of WTH! moments.

Truly, a sad state of affairs.

You would think that a child care attendant would be understanding..

Feces is diseased bio-hazards and should be treated as such. However, flogging is not the appropriate form of punishment.

This is why childcare training is so essential for positions such as this. Now is the time that the appropriate agencies responsible for child care licensure, be proactive in ensuring requisite skills in this area before the issuance of permits necessary for work in this area.

She was out of order. Maybe if she did not leave the child unattended in the bathroom and had brought the baby wipes in the first place the child would not ha e had a chance to do this. She is working with children everyday and at her age she should understand them and know how to handle children properly. If she has that kind of mentality she does not need to be working with children. Some adults need to learn how to discipline with understanding and not emotions and ignorance.

Dis ting,a female child abuser is still employed,in contact with children as a caretaker?
And the facility is still in operation With a license? And the name of this facility a secret?
      For real?
And a monetary fine, less than a week’s salary…what amounts to dinner for four with wine at a three star restaurant?
And dis ting will be out and about enjoying Christmas and her victim a 2 year old infant has been traumitized for possibly a lifetime?

BVI is and has for a long time, proven to be woefully lax in the protection of their children, physical or/and sexual assault on children here are shown little meaningful mercy, sympathy and protection by the courts.

You should be front of line demanding that she go. There is no way that she should still be employed to care for children. She is unfit and untrustworthy. If parents will not stand up and protect their children and side with the abuser then what hope have they got?

Recently I heard of a 10 year old being sexually abused by the mother’s boyfriend and the mother felt her loyalty for her boyfriend was more important than for her child and would not report him.

  20. Political Observer (PO) says:

Providing loving care to infants, toddlers……etc is a labour of love that requires caretakers/teachers to look out for the safety and well-being of children. Generally, daycare workers are not high paying jobs. These caretakers need to be certified in pre-childhood education, fingerprinted, background check conducted, bonded…..etc. If miss Salmon is still at the daycare, why is she still there? In the interest of the children, the daycare should have relieved Ms. Salmon of her duties. Each of us need to earn a living.

However, Ms. Salmon needs to earn a living in another field. The health, safety, security and well-being of young vulnerable children, as well as the aged, disabled, and mentally challenge, must be fully protected. Daycares must look beyond just hiring an available body. When relatives drop off a relative at a daycare, they need the comfort and peace of mind for the safety, health and well-being of their love ones. Stricter operational controls of and checks for daycares may be needed.

My son had the diarrhea for a few days before the abuse took place!! This happened on a Friday and it was only when I got home to bath my child is when the marks became evident!! This is when I then made contact with another teacher of the school. Keeping in mind that this was now at night!! I was then contacted by the teacher that abused my child, justifying her actions!!! I was told out of her mouth that when she first notice that he had mess himself that she gave him two lashes for messing and then took him to the bathroom where she then left him for seconds to get wipes, and returned to him with his underwear in his hand swinging. Then is when the teacher then said that she gave him four more lashes. Her excuse for the 14 distinct marks on my sons lower body was because she used her hand!!!!

I was contacted and asked to visit the school the Monday to discuss that matter further, which I then decided to take the matter to the police when it was reported!!!! Please note that I did not wait a week to report the incident!!!!

My son had not attended the school for a full month before this had happen to him!!!!

Prior to this my son would cry down the place every morning I was dropping him to school, which should had been warning signs for me!!!

I had and have no problems with anyone that owns or helps with the daily functions of this school!!!!!!!!!

Took me two months before I could have place him in another pre-school and within one week my son stopped crying to be lefted at school and actually now asks to go school.

Hmmm!! Some of ya’ll just talking a load of crap!! I know as a parent some of ya’ll would have tapped your child if it was done in your home in hopes that the child wouldn’t do it again. The bible says ‘spare the rod, spoil the child’. Some of ya’ll so quick to place blame and judgement without all the facts. Teacher Sharon is an excellent teacher..my daughter has been in her care for a little more than 2 years and I’ve never had an issue with her nor the school. All the best to her…

  38. EMERGENCY ALERT says:

First of all, this happened two years ago and only now Shawn is finding her Innocent? $500 to be paid to the magistrate court but what happens to the family, to the child? She still has her job? This ruling coming a month after child abuse awareness. Nonsense! Many of these daycares have untrained, uneducated workers who almost always can’t find work anywhere else so they resort to working at a daycare as a last ditch effort.
There are tsunami and earthquake evacuation drills for the territory but when you think about it, the majority of these people working at day cares don’t drive, have no set transportation, and some could barely walk properly. In the event of a real emergency, how are they going to get all those little children to safety?

Its normal for a child to cry months days week .you set of idots spoil your child/ren from birth dont allow them to be independent. So when its time for him/her to go school tecahers have try comfort themthats why they fail soceity in so many ways and you set jackass trying figure out where i went wrong! I qas waiting on your post since lastnight. You miss out half the story thats not what you told me .you also said you got back your money in full why leave that part out .and for the record we both know that little kid is rude as a jail sentence .im not wishing bad for him but dont pull up your socks as a parent and see you will be sitting in one that same chair mrs salmon sat yesterday you also said the schoo did disciple the teacher.your child is not the 1st nor the last to go school and cry it all depends how you start grooming him/her its just like starting a new job or migrating somewhere new .we adults no cry we dont go with the energy we had from whence cometh .it takes awhile .you so unfair you took back your money .and you still went court ! You want double justice. Hope you feeling better now if this the forum you was seeking your last rewards remember trials comes in phases.you could have dealt with through this same forum but privately.got to think about the child’s future as well because if i have a school i want nothing to deal with you are your families. You my dear mean well but please understand this, you and your thoughts and outlook are the worse of the worse. Our children are in trouble and because of adults like yourself with whom they come in contact before and post Irma
You are not able to comprehend your dysfunctional outlook but may God have mercy on your misguided and damaged soul.
A 2year old infant, traumatized, terrorized and tortured by a “trained preschool licensed teacher on work permit from a foreign country.license should be permanently revoked, she should be removed from the comm by imprisonment and deportation” the facility that employed her should be publicly revealed and the Director identified .An investigation at the school should be done in an attempt to identify possibly other victims.

This is ridiculous the parents should sue the school and the teacher, S per another news site
Sharon Salmon, a 53-year-old teacher employed at the Home Away From Home Pre-school and Daycare, pleaded guilty to a charge of child cruelty, which was exacted against a two-year-old boy.
