Team BVI Set for Samarkand

The British Virgin Islands Chess Federation (BVICF) has announced the national teams that will represent the Territory at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from September 15 – 28, 2026. The announcement is being made on International Chess Day, observed annually on July 20, to mark the founding of FIDE (the International Chess Federation) in 1924.

This year’s national teams reflect the steady growth of chess across the Virgin Islands, and the Federation’s continued investment in youth development and international representation. Members of the 2026 National Teams are:

Colombian trainer Angela Franco is currently serving as the Women’s National Team Coach and Captain for the Olympiad. Meanwhile the Open Team is being coached by French-Egyptian Grandmaster Samy Shoker and will be captained by Art Christopher. Jenefer McSheene is the Team Manager and Sachkia Barnes will represent the federation’s interest as BVI’s Delegate to FIDE’s Congress at the Olympiad.

Several members of this year’s delegation are currently in secondary school, a reflection of the progress being made through the Federation’s school and youth development partnership with the Ministry of Education. The 2026 teams blend emerging talent with experience, as the BVI continues to build its presence in regional and international chess.

BVICF extends its congratulations to all selected players and thanks the parents, families, coaches, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who continue to encourage the growth of chess in the Territory.
