The BVI is in fair shape after TS Phillipe — Acting Premier

Acting Premier Lorna Smith said the country appeared to be in good shape after she assessed some of the damage caused by Tropical Storm Phillipe on Tortola.

“I would say the country is in fair shape. Five inches of rain is a lot of rain. I think we are fortunate that the government had enough time, I would say, Philippe was a slow-moving storm and so we had enough time to prepare,” Smith said after looking at some of the damage.

Phillipe caused significant flooding to homes and businesses around Tortola and also caused some infrastructural damage to some of the territory’s roadways.

However, reports suggest that the sister islands were spared much of the flooding and debris that impacted Tortola.

The Acting Premier said a number of persons contacted her about flooding in their homes and about walls that had fallen down.

“We will get to you. As long as your life is safe, as long as you’re safe, as long as you’re not suffering, we will get to you,” she promised. “We will make sure that these things are fixed for you.”

But Smith also took time to express gratitude for the government’s RATED programme, which she said allowed persons to be hired to clear some of the ghuts around the island to allow the flood waters to run off freely.

Smith said she was given an assurance by Ninth District Representative Vincent Wheatley that the sister islands of Anegada and Virgin Gorda also fared well in the wake of Tropical Storm Phillipe.

“So overall, the territory seems to be safe. Karl Dawson, down in the First [District] has also assured me that they’re safe,” Smith added.

  4. Well well says:

Tortola always floods with 3 drops of rain. Big boulders always fall onto the roads during rains after a drought. Some sub standard “retaining” walls collapse with heavy rains. Trees fall. Nothing new here, when we have heavy rains after a drought. Homes and buildings sited in flood prone areas will be flooded every heavy rain, we see this like clockwork. Electricity goes out with almost no breeze at all. Poorly designed roads flood so badly they can’t be used at all. The definition of insanity is how the BVI Government always fails it’s citizens. Citizens must use self defense when it comes to weather events. Be smart, we are accustomed to a huge mess in the BVI if we get a few hours of rain. Be happy your cistern is full. Oh, wait you built Your building without a cistern? How did you get planning permission? Same old, same old BVI.

As long as all of the politician’s houses are OK, that’s all that matters.

I remember, following Irma and Maria, the VIP saying that they would learn. They promised in future they would prepare; they promised the ghuts would be maintained, free from debris, and that never again would we experience similar problems. They should look at my house, how dare they say all is OK.

The traveling premier can’t speak the truth and now the substitute can’t see the truth after heavy rain immobilizes the BVI again.

and then you all kicked them out so they could not deliver. Take what you all get now! 5 years and the BVI is in SHAMBLES! Locked up head of state, drug burst every other day. Execution in broad day light during peak hours with oncoming and ongoing traffic. Cost of living is at the highest we have ever seen. Affordable homes that no one can afford to rent or buy. Tax on everything even electricity! Water woes continues and have gotten worse! Deplorable roads, the worse in the history of bad roads. Tourism in problems! Teachers striking and leaving the education system! COI! Undeserving grants! The place is just RIDICULOUS at this point.

Territory was in fair shape before storm. So we be the same.

  12. TurtleDove says:

There need to be a series of water catchment areas developed to stop the water from going directly into the sea. This cant be sustainable. I understand the picture maynot be new.
