There is a smear campaign to discredit me

Police Commissioner Mark Collins said he believes there is an ongoing smear campaign to discredit him, despite his efforts to improve the safety of the BVI.

The Commissioner was speaking on Tola Radio on November 9, where host Cindy Rosan asked him whether he has an ongoing war with the local media.

Commissioner Collins noted that he doesn’t believe there is an ongoing war with the media, but said: “I think there’s clearly an ongoing campaign to discredit me as Police Commissioner and there’s been some other items in the news recently that have been completely not factual,” the Commissioner stated.

“Why do you think this campaign is on the go,” Rosan asked.

“You’d have to ask them that, not me,” Collins replied. “I came here as Police Commissioner three years ago to do a good job. You’ve mentioned corruption in the force, I’ve tried to root out some of the corruption and I maintain that I want to hold to higher standards.”

As evidence of the high standards he’s been maintaining, the Commissioner highlighted that he has rid the police force of some corrupt officers.

“We’ve taken a firm hand in terms of those who don’t meet the required standards to be police officers and where necessary we’ve interdicted officers and put them before the court,” Commissioner Collins said, adding that the officers were charged for various offences.

It’s still uncertain who the Commissioner thinks has launched a smear campaign against him. However, Virgin Islanders generally hold a grudge against the top cops in the BVI as the position is usually given to law enforcers from the UK. Instead, residents are more in favour of the position being granted to a local cop who has integrity and the experience to manage crime in the community. Still there are some who believe crime would be fuelled under the leadership of a local police commissioner.

    • Face the reality Mr. COP says:

There are many things about this man that needs urgent independent review, and investigation and it is because of genuine growing concerns and not a smear campaign like he is now trying to pitch it to the public:
      1) His overall lack of performance.
      2) His questionable closeness to the Governor who shields for him no matter what. There may be more here than meets the eye.
      3) His questionable handling of Frandy’s case given the free pass given to all involved seeing they are white and are suspects.
      4) Serious claims of him being racists.
      5) Serious concerns over his challenges with the truth (Ask any officer even the UK ones).
      6) The ongoing questionable actions over this leaked email to destroy evidence for his kind. Where there is one there mostly likely will be more and much deeper in nature in questionable conduct also. Other Caribbean & local police & public officers were sent home or put on leave by this Governor for less concerns than this email and investigated so why is he always given a free pass once he says he is innocent.
      7) The greatest the force has ever been divided coupled with low morale.
      8) His quick dismissing of wrongdoing in the recent death of the UK officer who was found dead in his car in the sea. An urgent independent review of his cause of death needs to be done because school children say there is more here than meets the eye. Could it be he was on to a major thing inside and was going to expose that which may include information on such also about #2 above?
9)His lack of being able to be proactive to fight crime.
10)He seems to be focused on the COI plot at all costs at the expense of the overall safety of the BVI public. Probably this is why the Governor is protecting him no matter what.
      11) Closed all out police stations and diplomatically called the BVI public liars and stupid when they said this was the case.
      12) Seem to just arrest and investigate blacks just for the sake of doing so in most cases without the proper evidence so he can look good & effective thereby creating the backlog in the prison then wrongfully put the pressure and blame on the DPP. Could this be part of their bigger plot which would include trying to justify why they should bring their own DPP of like minds?
      13) Failure to do succession planning for the police force.
      14) Allegedly did a cover up investigation into some of his UK officers using the police boat to go island hoping to drink and getting drunk while on duty.
      15) Allegedly did a cover investigation into his officers using the police boat to leave and enter the territory illegally as well as transport non police officers while doing so.
      16) Allegedly unaccounted for some of the seized money and drugs over the years where the last COP needs to be included in this review also.
      17) Allegedly selling governments vehicle and property with personal gain. The last few UK Commissioners need to be included in this review.
      18) Concerns over income and personal accomplishments beyond salary. This also needs to include the last few UK Commissioners in this review.
The list is long but will stop there for now. There are too many concerns and allegations at the feet of this man and the last few UK COP which never reached the “so called” Governor’s independent COI. This COP needs to be relieved of his duties or sent home so an independent review & investigation be done in his performance but be done in a manner where the Governor cannot organize one to allow for a cover up. One wonders if this was a Caribbean or local person as Commissioner with all these legitimate public & internal concerns, if they would still be getting the Governor’s support and still be on the job? Just a question for food for thought but I think everyone knows the answer. The young lawyer fellow Davies is on to something bigger than all of us may think.

The smear campaign is conducted by all the BVI islanders arrested in the last 3 years, on remand, convicted AND all their affected relatives, cronies and friends. • Come on, let's get real says:

The problem with prosecutions in the BVI is the DPP. As she regularly reminds us, it is her sole decision (having reviewed the evidence collected by the RVIPF) as to whether to prosecute and she is not answerable to anybody for her decision (except she is of course accountable to the Judge when he/she tells the DPP that the case should be dismissed). Unfortunately, the DPPs legal skills and judgment too often lead to the wrong decision and the Judge has to dismiss the case before it gets to the jury.

No one is smearing him as he is opinning. He is not above the law. He has done too many questionable acts which needs to be reviewed. Whenever he is challenged he come out to public to try to intimidate the public so he can be left alone but this will not work. Giving public rants that you are innocent do not make you innocent. He should not be allowed to get away with this nonsense. Less than what he is being allegedly to have done triggers the Governor to take action and also triggers him to investigate others. The scale of justice must be always balanced as no one is above the law. If he can keep coming to public to declare his innocence when accused of certain actions and get away with it then every other person especially public officers must be allowed to do the same. If he is not dealt with in the proper legal way then he becomes a lose cannon and he becomes dangerous as he will be given a full license to act above the law. This man needs to be reign in now.

It’s not complicated. The CoI shone a really bright light on why, despite the billions of Government revenue paid in since the 1980s, the BVI is still a third world dustbin, despite a flourishing offshore and yacht charter business.

The smear campaign against the Commissioner is designed to divert attention from the endemic corruption and mismanagement of the last 40 years. The real victims of this are the general public and especially the BVIslanders.

It’s blindingly obvious so only fools will fall for it.

the truth is that any white English man or woman appointed to be commissioner of police some section of the bvi community would always have issues with it because the facts speak for itself. the bvi just like most other Caribbean Islands depends on illegal activities to sustain their livelihood. the drug trade brings in a very large amount of income for many and many more than what some of us want to believe. well let me say approximately 6 six to eight thousand benefits from illegal activities in the bvi and this is just a rough estimate. some get the benefits directly and some indirectly just like other countries. if you have a premier that boast about dealing in drugs and guns well my God commissioner do you think that these people that supported a government that does this type of illegal activities would not want to get rid of you?? look at the surveillance during covid. the premier and his government and to a large extent the people of this territory did not want the British help they wanted a local radar system because of what Mr commissioner??because the people of this territory supports the people that are involve in anything illegal. look at the human trafficking that is taking place here for such a small island. no the people here would do anything to not have you here.look at what a talk show host said about the former commissioner few nights ago.these people are hurting because of people like you and the other officers from the uk. they would come after me to but not the facts .they would never touch it.the people love illegal activities so much that they voted back the same government that the world knows pride themselves on drugs and guns.this alone should tell you the kind of people that live here. there’s a few decent ones but at present they’re hard to find and they wouldn’t speak out because some relatives of there’s is involve.mr commissioner if you didn’t know now you know.

  22. My honest Opinion says:

A BVISlander born and raised, I love my country and I pray that soon we will be back to a semblance of what we were before Irma/Maria hit in 2017.

Before 2017, Government was represented by more mature, business-minded individuals whose focus were more so building this country and its people. We were dealt very serious blows with the Hurricanes of 2017 and from my memory and saved pictures, I was unsure if we ever would get back up again. This is responsible for some of the infrastructural decay that we are suffering through. Lots of persons left thinking the same, that the BVI was no more.

Because careful attention was always paid to finances and proper planning, the resources was found along with a small $65 million loan sourced by the NDP earlier and we started work to rise out of the ashes. We were able to build back some of our broken pieces and reopen for business.

Unfortunately, a very young, inexperienced Government, well over their heads was then voted into power. Then the COVID pandemic hit, making it the perfect storm for the BVI.

What was needed was a steady hand on the wheel this last election to right the ship of State and make some tough decisions that only maturity and persons who think futuristically can make. The young people now serving are all good people and we love them, but they are proving to lack the requisite focus and decision making ability to get us back to where we were pre hurricanes/floods and pandemic.

Immediate decisions and proactive forward movement needed on the Pockwood Pond dumpsite, our Water distribution system, Road works, Immigration, the Government Complex, (First, building needs to be immediately reopened and another building built.) Rental fees and the cost of running the Civil Service takes up most of the $400 million and now constant travelling here of late.

The younger generation wants their time to lead. They will get it, but right now maybe they need to get out of the way as serious mature help from persons who have truly seen from whence we came is needed to get us out of the duldrums and the dark place in which we sit in this beautiful country.

I totally agree with every sentence. One problem in most sectors of This Territory and maybe elsewhere,
Some people in positions of Authority refuse to
implement succession Planning as a Policy in their Organizations. (1) Because of Job Security. Some people would rather hold a Company hostage before they Train a Successor. Thats why they are not deemed to be successful. Some people would rather love to know that if they are away from that Company, nothing happens until they return. People who think and act like that are insecure Fools.
If you Die tomorrow, someone will take your position. Nobody is indispensabe. Past Legislators neglected to declare and Coach someone to take over from them and still happening thats why we are where we are today and unfortunately with the mindset of un-educated Voters, we will be in the same predicament for years to come. Sadly some people of this Territory can cope better with barely surviving than thriving. “Facts” said it right. The majority of Families in this Territory are directly or indirectly gaining from illegal activities like Drugs, Guns and other Crimes. Check out the Funerals when one of their Loved Ones dies and you can see they cry more because of probably not being able to partake of any more of the proceeds than actually missing the person. Check out the Fluff!!!! Sad to think and say, But The BVI will get worse before it gets better.
