Thieves stripping unsecured vehicles for parts

Police are warning residents of thieves who are stripping parts from unsecured vehicles.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) gave the warning while noting an increase in the number of reports of vehicle-related heists in the territory.

“Evidence indicates that members of the public are using the cover of night to take parts off vehicles and boats left on roadsides and in parking lots that are unsecured with missing windows or windscreens,” said the RVIPF’s Information Unit on Monday, April 30.

Police said assailants have stolen side mirrors, batteries, grills, radio systems, spare tires, and other parts.

One victim reported that an envelope of cash was stolen from the glove compartment, police added.

“Vehicle owners are being encouraged to remove all valuables and any items that are susceptible to theft from vehicles that are left overnight, especially in vulnerable places,” said police.

In the meantime, persons with information about the perpetrators of these crimes are asked to contact the RVIPF via their three-digit access number, 311.
