Third public contract for repair works on VG signed within days
Representative of the Ninth Electoral District where Virgin Gorda is located, Vincent Wheatley was seen beaming with contentment that a third contract for repairs to a public building on the sister island was inked in a matter of days.
“I am indeed very happy today. This is my third time here and my third contract in five days concerning a sister island, and I am very, very pleased. It’s phenomenal, and it’s practically unheard of,” the minister said on Tuesday.
“It is really good to see this building fixed after the hurricanes. For many years, they have been neglected but now they aren’t feeling so neglected,” he added.
Contract
The contract, valued at $625,400, was signed between the Recovery & Development Agency and Quality Construction to completely rebuild the John E George Building in North Sound.
It is being funded by the Government of the Virgin Islands through the Caribbean Development Bank’s Recovery & Rehabilitation Loan.
The scope of works will include the complete refurbishment and redevelopment of the two-story building, reworking of the internal layout to include a public reception, mail and postal sorting facilities on the ground floor, a 500 square-foot reading room and lecture space on the first floor, and a 250 square-foot library, new office spaces for public servants and police officers.
The roof is also expected to be inspected and repaired, and other areas such as the cistern, pumps, air conditioning will also be done.
Work is expected to commence immediately.
Time VG got attention
In the meantime, Premier Andrew Fahie who also delivered remarks said he too was pleased that the sister island was benefitting from the contracts.
“My government has always said that no island would be left behind. We are pleased to see that contracts are signed to rehabilitate and reconstruct public buildings like the Bregado Flax School and the Flax Administration Building on Virgin Gorda and today we see another one being signed on Virgin Gorda,” the Premier said.
“I know that there are those who are thinking that all the money is going to Virgin Gorda, but please rest assured that there are plenty more projects coming for the people of the BVI on all the islands. But is about time Virgin Gorda get a little more attention” he added.

Contracts are signing to get repair works done on the sister island and I am happy that this is being done. However, road works to fix undermined roads on Jost Van Dyke was started but cannot be completed.
