Three additional magistrates appointed

Governor Augustus Jaspert has appointed three persons to the post of additional magistrate in the British Virgin Islands.

The three additional magistrates are Giselle Jackman-Lumy, Hakim Creque, and Christilyn Benjamin.

The governor appointed them on advice from the Legal Services Commission.

Thier appointment took effect on July 25.

The trio will each serve as additional magistrates for six months.

Additional magistrates are typically activated when full-time magistrates are unavailable.

The territory’s full-time magistrates are Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards and Magistrate Ayanna Baptiste DaBreo.

Regular magistrate court proceedings have been disrupted since the 2017 hurricanes, which caused considerable damage to the courthouses across the territory. This disruption led to a backlog in court cases in the territory.

In the last few months, the magistrate court has mostly been holding priority matters in makeshift courtrooms in Road Town. It has also managed to return some degree of regularisation to local court proceedings.

That effort was buttressed this week with the opening of a modular court building in John’s Hole, Tortola.

The 1,365 square-foot building has been retrofitted with ramps and restrooms facilities, a general waiting area, the magistrate’s courtroom, a prisoner holding area, and an office for magistrates.

Isn’t one of the countries revenue streams the courts!?! And the country does need money. Plus if NDP knew how to manage the country we wouldn’t be in such a bad state with the school among all the other problems.

The BVI’s courts are probably a government expense rather than a revenue stream. There are a large number of salaried civil servants employed in the civil and commercial court registries for the High Court, Magistrate’s Court, the Department of Public Prosecution(DPP) and the Attorney General chambers.

Congratulations to everyone. Also CONGRATULATIONS to Mr. Carvin Malone who was the contractor intentionally not mentioned with any significance by that politically motivated PS during the handing over of the building ceremony as the one who build the building on time and on budget.
