Too expensive to get to Anegada!

Ninth District Representative Vincent Wheatley has urged legislators to consider alternative measures that would make it cheaper for visitors and residents to get to the sister islands, especially those travelling to and from Anegada.

Wheatley, who represents the Virgin Gorda and Anegada, made those comments in the wake of the reportedly successful 10th-anniversary edition of the Anegada Lobster Fest.

According to Wheatley, legislators should examine the difficulty in travelling between Beef Island, Virgin Gorda, and Anegada which he described as too expensive.

“We got to figure out something with transportation — subsidising these ferry services or something because you make money when people are travelling around the BVI,” Wheatley said. “More persons would travel if it was easier and more convenient to do so.”

The legislator also complained about the availability of medical facilities in Virgin Gorda and the outer islands.

“If we’re going to be attracting persons, they don’t have to wonder, ‘if something happens, can I get a stitch? Can I get an X-ray?’ That’s last-century stuff,“ Wheatley stated.

“If we’re going to be getting this kind of recognition in Forbes [magazine], we have to make sure when these persons come to us they want to come back and send others. Because what they experience here is more than just sand and sea. [It’s] also the people the cuisine and also these other services,” the lawmaker said.

Every time you open your mouth, something foolish come out. You expect Government to further subsidize personal travel?

Appears to be time for some sailing entrepreneurs to introduce a high speed multihull sailing ferry between Anegada and Virgin Gorda/Beef Island. Besides reducing the ferry ticket price it would be a great ‘blue’ low energy attraction for the BVI.

He made a good point it is really expensive to travel back and forth to these close islands, now Jost Van Dyke charging for each piece of luggage plus the fare up. The ferries to St.Thomas price is also ridiculous and charging for each luggage , why everything is going up and salary has not change why

He did A LOT, but of course you would not be able to see or understand the positive things he has done because your obvious job is to discredit and spin everything in a negative way.

Those who understand know that the commerce would grow five times if people were able to move around the BVI at convenient and reasonable rates. There are several examples all over the world including our neighbours in the USVI.BAH

  9. Hmmm says:

.. and now they have increased the cost of the 10 mkns ferry trip from West End to JVD to $40

  10. Anonymous says:

A taxi trip from Towers to Town or vice versa costs me ,if I am lucky $25 so in comparison ferry trip to the surrounding islands is dirt cheap.

  12. knows nothing says:

the ferries are already subsidized for trips to Anegada Mon/Wed/Fri what they need to do is stop charging residents for every bix they want to bring onboard after shopping in town. Now the businesess that bring loads, yes i understand them being charged but not just shoppers on the ferry for the day.

  13. More People!? says:

Did you go to this year’s Lobster Fest?? They ran out of food about 2:00, don’t get me wrong, it was a lot of fun…but we didn’t need more people to overwhelm the restaurant staff.
So you want more cheaper ferries? Think before you open your mouth. You don’t know what you are talking about.
Anegada is a special place, but is not that big. Don’t over run the place! The tourists are chartering yachts. They have money and spend it at bars and restaurants (and tip!)
You destroyed the Baths with cruise ship idiots that over run the place and don’t spend money on land. The only people that make out are the taxi drivers (and they get no tips either!)
    QUALITY OVER QUANTITY PLEASE
