Top cop’s 2021 review: Charges laid for 5 of 9 murders in last 2 years

Commissioner of Police, Mark Collins.

The Commissioner of Police, Mark Collins said the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has arrested and charged persons for five of the nine murders committed in the territory over the last two years.

In a new year’s press statement, the Commissioner praised the RVIPF for the work they did in 2021 and noted that the collective work has resulted in a decline in reported crimes and a high detection rate.

“In fact, a total of 20 suspects were charged with murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm, robbery, and other related offences,” the top cop said.

“Additionally, we confiscated over two tonnes of cocaine, 30 firearms, 1,650 rounds of ammunition, hundreds of thousands of dollars believed to be generated from proceeds of criminal conduct, along with a number of counterfeit notes, well-over 150 motorbikes, uprooted marijuana fields, and recaptured an escaped prisoner who was wanted locally and overseas in connection with several serious offences. This can only be remitted to exceptional and excellent work by all concerned,” he added.

Commissioner Collins also said many contributing factors such as retirements, resignations, interdictions, and COVID-19 have severely impacted the manpower of the RVIPF.

However, he noted both officers and civilian staff banded together as a collective to set new records and make the Virgin Islands safer for those who live here.

“I am quite aware that none of this has happened by chance but rather as a direct result of hard work, commitment, and dedication. With that said, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you. Your contribution, no matter the quantity, has acutely positioned us to be seen as an organisation which is making a positive impact and a difference in the BVI,” Commissioner Collins added.

The RVIPF has described 2021 as a successful year for policing.

That photo is speaking volumes. ..Further, it is rubbing salt into open wounds. It is dehumanizing to a segment of the population. It exemplifies colonialism, its horrofic history and dominance over certain people…..It demonstrates insensitivity towards a certain people and high arrogance…. It should not be used for public consumption..

Top Cop needs to insure that his officers leaving A shift brief the on coming shift of the current happening. A matter of the left hand NOT knowing what the right hand is doing. Present shift has no clue of what took place in their absence!!

May have laid charges for 20 but how many will they convict? Many of these cases will fail in Court and the perps will be back out on the streets after a holiday at HMP!

Charged but not convicted. How many of these cases will fail at court? That is the proof of a successful investigation!
