Trade Dept., HLSCC honour graduates under new training programme
The Department of Trade and H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) honoured a group of budding entrepreneurs earlier this week, who completed a new business training programme aimed at strengthening small businesses and boosting economic growth in the BVI.
The ceremony, held at the HLSCC Marine Centre, marked the end of the first cohort of a three-module initiative delivered over recent weeks. Participants were trained in market research, marketing strategy, and financial literacy — skills officials say are essential for long-term business success.
Business Development Manager within the Trade Department, Leroy James, said the programme is a key demonstration of the government’s commitment to nurturing the small business sector.
“This is more than just a workshop,” he said. “It’s part of our ongoing commitment to business development — mentorship programmes, training, and real support for entrepreneurs. This is the path we’re on.”
The first cohort drew 20 participants, although not all were present at the ceremony. The course ran for three weeks, with sessions held twice weekly from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Organisers said interest has already grown significantly.
A second cohort is being prepared for February 2026, offering the same three modules with the possibility of an additional component. Registration remains open, and officials said the first set of registrants will have their fees covered. “We want to expand access and build a stronger entrepreneurship ecosystem,” the department said.
HLSCC officials praised the partnership as an example of how educational institutions can directly support national development goals.
In the meantime, the Department of Trade also revealed early plans to introduce entrepreneurship exposure in local high schools, aiming to prepare students to become future industry leaders rather than job seekers alone.

That trni man gots to go
Ha ha ha. All they get is a completion certificate?
Better they got a Trade License and Trade got out of the way of businesses and competition.
What good is a training program when the economy has no money in it. Your brother down Pussers selling a bowl of small soup for $15.00, where is the price control.
